Cardinals Beat Tulsa 4-1

August 5, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Springfield Cardinals

Springfield, MO - Strong pitching and timely offense gave Springfield a close 4-1 victory over the Tulsa Drillers in a quick two-hour two-minute game.

Xavier Scruggs showed up at the plate today with two RBIs. His first came in the sixth inning with a solo home run to right-center field. Scruggs then added an insurance run in the eighth with a double scoring Oscar

Taveras and Adam Melker delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

Scruggs entered the game in an offensive drought. He had been batting .179 in his past 10 games. He went two for four tonight.

Cardinals pitcher Seth Maness (9-2) started the game tonight against Tulsa. He entered the game after one of his roughest starts of the season against Arkansas on July 31. Maness gave up seven runs in five innings. The game tonight was a different story.

Maness pitched seven great innings allowing one unearned run on four hits. He also set a new season-high with nine strikeouts. Previously, his season-high was eight against Tulsa on May 21 in his Double-A season debut.

Pitching wasn't the only bright spot for Maness tonight as he added some flair at the plate and base path.

With two outs in the fifth, he singled to center. After Greg Garcia walked, Jermaine Curtis hit an RBI single scoring Maness from second base. Maness had a nice slide at home to secure a run for the Cardinals.

Tulsa's Brandon Hynick (4-2) departed after pitching seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Hynick leads Drillers' starters with a 1.86 ERA through seven starts this season.

The Drillers scored their only run in the fourth inning with an RBI single from Mike Mitchell.

The Cardinals will conclude their four-game series with the Drillers Monday night at 7:08. Springfield will have Scott McGregor on the mound against big league rehabber Jhoulys Chacin of Tulsa.
