Auburn Doubledays News Release
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Brooklyn Cyclones (28-18) quieted the bats of the Auburn Doubledays (28-17) thanks in part to seven stellar innings of pitching from starting RHP Hansel Robles (3-1), en route to a 4-1 win on Saturday night.
The Doubledays had collected a combined 45 hits in their previous three games against the Staten Island Yankees, but in Brooklyn the offense fell back down to earth as Robles limited Auburn to one unearned run on three hits in seven innings while striking out eight. The one Doubledays run came in the sixth as CF Narciso Mesa got aboard with an infield single to begin the inning, and then advanced to second on a throwing error by 3B Dimas Ponce. A sacrifice bunt by catcher Spencer Kieboom pushed Mesa to third, and he scored on a groundout to first by SS Mike McQuillan.
The Auburn run in the sixth tied the score at one, as Brooklyn had lead 1-0 since the first inning. In the bottom of the first a leadoff double given up to CF Brandon Nimmo proved costly, because he went to third on a single by SS Phillip Evans, and then scored on a passed ball by catcher Spencer Kieboom. That wound up as the only run scored against Doubledays starter LHP Blake Monar, who threw five innings of three-hit ball while walking five and striking out four to earn a no-decision.
The Cyclones broke the 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh to put the game away. The inning began with a leadoff double for Ponce, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Nimmo, who had gone 2 for 2 up until that point with two doubles, was intentionally walked, putting runners on the corners with one out. Then came back-to-back unintentional walks, the latter of which drove home Ponce for what proved to be the winning run. Nimmo then scored from third on a sacrifice fly, and after one more walk DH Alex Sanchez drove home the third run of the inning with an infield single deep in the whole at short.
RHP Silvio Medina (0-2) was charged for all three runs in the inning and consequently suffered the loss. Robles got the win for Brooklyn, while RHP Tyler Vanderheiden came on to pitch a scoreless ninth and record his eighth save of the season.
The Doubledays and Cyclones continue their three game series on Sunday, August 5. Auburn will send LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-0) to the mound for his fifth start of the year. He will square off against New York Mets LHP Johan Santana who will be making a rehab start for the Cyclones. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm.
