Iowa Cubs News Release

Des Moines, IA - The Cubs continued their skid in their sixth-straight loss after falling 7-4 to the Sky Sox Thursday night at Principal Park. Brooks Raley held the explosive Sky Sox (59-54) offense to six runs over six innings, fanned five, walked two and suffered the loss.

Iowa (42-71) took an early lead on an RBI double off the bat of Jim Adduci in the first inning to score Alfredo Amezaga. Greg Rohan continued his hot hitting as an I-Cub with a bloop single to right to give Brooks Raley a two-run cushion to start the second.

Chris Nelson cut the Cubs lead in half in the third with an RBI single with two down. The Sky Sox cashed in on three more two-out runs in the fourth to take the lead. Wilkin Castillo knocked a three-run shot to give the Colorado Springs a 4-2 advantage. A single, a double, and a triple added up to two more runs in the fifth for the Sky Sox.

Rohan could not be quelled as he chopped a double down the left field line to plate Josh Vitters and drive in his fifth RBI in two games. Vitters knocked three singles on the evening for his 33rd multi-hit game of the season. Meanwhile, the newest I-Cub reached base in four of his five plate appearances, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a fielder's choice. Rob Scahill finished the fifth, allowing just those three runs and striking out six to pick up the win.

The Cubs threatened in the seventh against Edgmer Escalona. Vitters ripped a one-out single and stole second before Rohan worked a walk. Sappelt slapped his third single of the night sharply to left to lead the bases. Marcus Hatley impressed in his Principal Park debut, hurling two perfect innings of relief and fanning half the batters he faced.

Blake Lalli led off the eighth with a pinch-hit double that curled down the right field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brett Jackson walked to put runners on the corners and Lalli scored on a double play ball by Amezaga to bring the Cubs within two. Jairo Asencio allowed a Sky Sox insurance run in the ninth inning for his I-Cubs home debut.

Jackson celebrated his 24th birthday by going 1-for-4 at the plate and swiping his team-leading 26th stolen base.

The Cubs will look to snap the losing streak tomorrow with another 7:05 p.m. start at Principal Park. Game three of the series will feature LH Edwar Cabrera (3-1) against an Iowa pitcher to be named. Catch the Pre-Game On-Deck Circle with Deene Ehlis and Randy Wehofer at 6:45 p.m.
