Tucson Padres News Release

In only his second game with the Tucson Padres, Andrew Werner pitched a five-hit shutout against the Round Rock Express at the Dell Diamond. The complete game shutout was the first in Tucson Padres history. The left-hander threw only 103 pitches and did not walk a batter in the first complete game of his affiliated baseball professional career.

Daniel Robertson wasted no time putting Tucson on the board by leading off the game with a home run into the left field upper deck of the Dell Diamond. The leadoff home run was the first by a Padres player since Everth Cabrera accomplished the feat on April 17, 2011.

Round Rock's starter Chad Bell shut down the Padres the next five innings until Jesus Merchan hit a solo shot in the top of the seventh. Ryan Spilborghs came close to ending Werner's shutout when he tried to score on a near inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the seventh. Spilborghs hit a deep fly ball to Robertson in center field when Robertson collided with the fence, allowing the ball to skip away. Right fielder Jeremy Hermida picked up the ball and fired it to Andy Parrino who relayed it home to catcher Rocky Gale to apply the tag on Spilborghs.
