Reno Aces News Release
Papillion, Neb. - Cole Gillespie homered in the sixth inning Thursday night, but Omaha held Reno to just five more hits, as the Storm Chasers edged the Aces, 4-2, at Werner Park.
After Omaha took a quick 1-0 lead in the first, the Aces tied the score two innings later on a run-scoring groundout by Jake Elmore. The ballgame remained deadlocked until the fifth, when the Storm Chasers tacked on three runs to take a lead they wouldn't let slip away. Gillespie's solo homer in the sixth drew Reno to within two, but the Aces would get no closer.
Aces starter Joe Martinez (10-8) took the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. After his exit, Mike DeMark and Bryan Shaw combined to keep Omaha off the scoreboard over the game's final 2.2 innings.
The win went to Storm Chaser starter Ryan Verdugo (8-3), who scattered two runs on four hits through six frames. Francisley Bueno worked two scoreless innings before Vin Mazzaro came on in the ninth to nail down the save.
Konrad Schmidt collected Reno's lone two-hit effort, while Adam Eaton doubled and drew a pair of walks.
The series continues Friday night. LHP Tyler Skaggs (3-1, 2.08 ERA) toes the slab for Reno, while Omaha will counter with RHP Jake Odorizzi (8-1, 3.09 ERA). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PT at Werner Park, and the action can be heard live on Fox Sports 630 AM or by visiting RenoAces.com.
The Aces return to Downtown Reno on Aug. 10 to kick-off an eight-game homestand. Tickets are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
