MANCHESTER, N.H. - Yohan Pino pitched seven strong innings for the Fisher Cats on Thursday afternoon, but a lack of run support left him and his team on the losing end of a 3-2 decision to the Erie SeaWolves (49-61). Pino allowed all three runs, leaving the Fisher Cats (43-68) and SeaWolves knotted at one win each heading into the series finale on Thursday night.
Erie struck first during the matinee, with a Tony Plagman double plating the game's first run in the top of the second.
An inning later, the Fisher Cats answered with their lone outburst on the day. With one out and one on, John Tolisano launched a fly ball down the left field line. It was originally ruled a foul ball before the umpires convened and ruled that Tolisano had indeed hit his sixth home run of the year to put the Fisher Cats ahead 2-1.
From there, Pino (L; 5-7) and Erie starter Jared Wesson (W; 7-6) controlled the game. From the third through the sixth innings, Pino allowed just one hit, at one point retiring ten in a row. Wesson allowed a pair of runners to reach in the fourth before he retired the next seven straight.
In the seventh, Pino's luck would run out. A lead-off walk led to a run-scoring double by Avisail Garcia to tie the game at 2-2. Later in the inning, with Garcia at third, a bunt by Brandon Douglas brought home the go-ahead run at 3-2.
Pino eventually escaped the inning to toss seven full with three runs allowed. He struck out five and walked two. In his last two starts, Pino has been bedeviled by a lack of run support, allowing just three runs over 13 innings in a pair of losses.
The Fisher Cats did have opportunities over the final three innings with the lead man reaching in each frame. A pick off, a double play, and a few stranded runners spelled the end of the game.
The teams now meet for the rubber game on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Thursday's game features post-game Atlas Fireworks. For tickets and a full list of promotions for the remainder of the homestand, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
Thursday's pitching match-up features RHP Fernando Hernandez (3-6, 4.94) against Erie RHP Patrick Cooper (2-6, 5.40). Radio coverage begins at 6:45 PM with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
