River Bandits Losing Streak Reaches Six Following 5-3 Loss

July 30, 2012 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Early on, it looked as if the Quad Cities River Bandits were going to snap a season-high five-game losing streak, but starter Tyrell Jenkins ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing two runs, including the go-ahead tally of a 5-3 loss at the hands of the Kane County Cougars Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Trailing the River Bandits, 3-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth, Kane County (19-17 second half, 53-53 overall) chased Jenkins, who lasted 4 2/3 innings, and allowed four earned runs on six hits while walking just one and striking out three. The lone walk led off the fifth and was issued to Kevin David, who came around to tie the game on an RBI single by center fielder Alex Llanos. Following the base hit, left-hander Jonathan Cornelius entered, and walked Daniel Mateo before allowing a go-ahead double by Jorge Bonifacio that put the Cougars ahead for good.

Kane County touched up Jenkins (2-4) for two runs in the bottom of the second to open the scoring in the afternoon contest. With one out in the frame, Cougars first baseman Dean Espy and left fielder Tim Ferguson hit back-to-back doubles to make it a 1-0 game. Two batters later, Yowill Espinal singled to left, scoring Ferguson from third after he advanced to third on a groundout to put the Cougars up 2-0.

Quad Cities (16-20, 51-54) answered back with three runs in the top of the third against Kane County starter Angel Baez (6-3). Catcher Casey Rasmus singled to lead off the inning, and then stole second - his first of two steals on the afternoon. Rasmus advanced to third on a groundout by Matt Williams, and came around to score on a David Medina single after Stephen Piscotty walked. A run-scoring single by David Bergin tied the game at two before Jeremy Patton put Quad Cities ahead, 3-2, with a sacrifice fly.

The Cougars added an insurance run in the sixth off Cornelius, who pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief of Jenkins, and allowed a lone, unearned run, on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Right-hander Ricky Martinez finished off the game for Quad Cities, throwing two scoreless frames.

Quad Cities is now 2-7 on the road this season against the Cougars, and have fallen into sole possession of fifth place in the Midwest League Western Division for the first time since June 13, when the River Bandits' record stood at 32-34. The six-game losing streak is the longest for Quad Cities since an eight-game skid June 13-20, 2009.
