Roll Continues for Travs with 6-2 WinJuly 28, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Arkansas Travelers
The Travs win is their fifth in six games against Tulsa and gives them a 19-16 second half record. The Drillers fall three games behind Arkansas for second place with a 15-20 record.
A.J. Schugel was limited to just four innings and 73 pitches on Saturday. He delivered a four inning performance without allowing a run and just three base hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Christian Scholl (2-1) dealt two innings of shutout work on two base hits to pick up the win. Caleb Graham (1) earned the save with 2.1 innings allowing one run on a Lars Davis homer (2).
The Travs defeated Dan Houston on Saturday night scoring five runs in his 4.2 innings on nine base hits and two walks. Houston was victimized by two errors, including one of his own, leading to a pair of unearned runs.
For the second night in a row the Travs played with the lead from the first inning. Travis Witherspoon hit a leadoff double and took third base on Osuna's first single of the night. Houston plunked Paul McAnulty to load the bases bringing up Lopez. He should have made the first out but Ben Paulsen dropped his pop up in foul territory for an error. Then Houston walked Lopez forcing Witherspoon home for a 1-0 lead. Brian Hernandez then grounded into a double play and Ryan Mount was caught looking at strike three.
Ramirez hit his first double leading off the second inning, then Angel Castillo bunted on the left side forcing Houston to come off the mound. He threw wildly past first base allowing Ramirez to score for a 2-0 Travs lead.
Another Ramirez double came in the fourth inning with one out and he scored on a two-out single by Darwin Perez.
The only threat Schugel faced came in the fourth when a dropped third strike, walk and single loaded the bases with one out. Davis though struck out and Schugel got Tim Torres to bounce to second base ending the threat.
The first three batters of the fifth inning reached base off Houston all on singles. Osuna and McAnulty both singled to left field then Lopez knocking Osuna home with a single to right. McAnulty came home on a sacrifice fly by Hernandez for a 5-0 lead.
The last Travs run came in the eighth inning as Ramirez was hit by a pitch and later scored on Osuna's third single.
Scholl retired the side in order in the fifth inning then came back for the sixth. Nolan Arenado lined a leadoff base hit to left field but was thrown out at second base by Ryan Mount. After allowing a single to Paulsen, Scholl induced a double play from Kent Matthes on a grounder to Osuna at second base.
The Drillers broke up the shutout bid in the seventh inning on a bloop single by Warren Schaeffer off Buddy Boshers. Graham got the last out of the seventh inning and only had one blemish when Davis homered in the ninth inning.
Time of game was 2:57 and the paid attendance was 5,528.
