Burlington Bees News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (7/18/12) - The Burlington Bees (45-48, 14-11) scored twice in the top of the ninth and defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (47-48, 12-13) 4-to-3 on Wednesday. The two-run rally gave the Bees a 2-2 record when enter- ing the ninth inning tied with their opponent.
The Bees entered the ninth inning without a hit since the fifth inning. With one out in the top of the ninth, Rashun Dixon ended an 11-at bat hitless streak for the club. Dixon dropped a base hit into left and stood at first for Nick Rickles.
Rickles smacked his second hit to deep left-center field that bounced off the high-end of the wall and scored Dixon to give the Bees a 4-to-3 lead. The Silver Hawks caught Rickles between second and third base for the second out, but the Bees weren't done. Wade Kirkland walked and eventually scored on an infield single by Bobby Crocker. The Bees led 5-to-3 entering the bottom of the ninth.
Jonathan Joseph closed the door in the ninth and converted his sixth save in six opportunities this season. After blowing a save, Jose Macias (4-5) earned his fourth win. Overall, Seth Frankoff, Macias, and Joseph pitched six innings in relief of Julio Ramos. Frankoff allowed two earned runs in 3.2 innings.
Ramos made only his second appearance and first start for the Bees in game one. The left-hander looked sharp in the first two innings and didn't allow a base runner until the first batter of the bottom of the third. Eric Groff hit a leadoff double and scored on a ground ball by Raul Navarro. Ramos (0-0) pitched three innings and only allowed one hit and one earned run.
Trailing 2-to-0 with one out in the top of the fifth, Wade Kirkland started a string of walks that helped the Bees conquer top-prospect Archie Bradley. Kirkland, Max Muncy, and Crocker walked and loaded the bases for Aaron Shipman. Ship- man lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Kirkland. Sean Jamieson followed with a two-out double that scored two runs and gave the Bees a 3-to-2 lead at the time. The Sliver Hawks eventually tied the game in bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Groff.
The Bees have won three consecutive games and finally won the opening contest of a series. The club had lost the open- ing game of the last six series prior to Wednesday's victory.
After losing four consecutive games, the Bees try to win their fourth consecutive game on Thursday when Tanner Peters (0-3) takes the hill. First pitch of game two is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT.
