Gerritse, RiverDogs Twirl 5-0 Shutout

CHARLESTON, SC - Brett Gerritse threw six scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Charleston RiverDogs as they knocked off the Greenville Drive 5-0 in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday afternoon with 4,019 in attendance.

The first-place RiverDogs improved to 54-39 (15-11 in the second half) with the win and also earned a split of this four game series. Greenville fell to 45-50 (11-14 in the second half).

"Great win, good way to finish off the homestand," said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza "Another very nice outing from Gerritse, the bullpen again was fantastic. We got a big homer from Nunez and some timely hitting."

The game was scoreless for the first two innings, but in the third, Reymond Nunez put the RiverDogs in front with a two-run homer over the right field wall, his fifth of the year, off starter Henry Owens (9-3).

Gerritse (3-4) made the lead stand up with an outstanding pitching performance. In six innings, he faced just two batters over the minimum. Greenville managed only three hits and no walks against him with six strikeouts.

In the fifth, Gerritse received more run support as the RiverDogs extended their lead to 4-0. Ali Castillo started the inning by reaching on an error and later scored on a Ben Gamel (2-3, RBI, run) single. That brought up Tyson Blaser, who slapped an RBI double down the right field line to score Gamel with the fourth run. Charleston tacked on another run in the sixth to go up by five.

Relief pitcher Dan Mahoney entered the game in the seventh, but it didn't get any easier for the Drive. In two hitless frames, Mahoney struck out three before handing things over to Pedro Guerra. Guerra pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win.

BALLPARK FUN: The Charleston Fire Department was on hand spraying fans with a fire hose as part of Big Splash Day, which turned The Joe into a virtual waterpark.

COMING UP: After a day off, the RiverDogs head to Kannapolis for the first time this season to play the Intimidators in a four game series. The starters in game one are RHP Philip Wetherell (4-2, 6.07 ERA) for Charleston and LHP Scott Snodgress (3-3, 3.56 ERA) for Kannapolis. The RiverDogs will return to The Joe for seven-games, starting on Monday, July 23 at 7:05 with a match-up against the Rome Braves. Integrative Cancer Care will be featured at the game on Dogs With A Cause night, presented by 105.5 FM The Bridge. The Ashley View Pub will have $1 beers on Hair of the Dog Monday, sponsored by 98 Rock.
