Owlz Crush Chukars 20-6

July 9, 2012 - Pioneer League (PL) Idaho Falls Chukars

For the second straight game the Owlz offense had their way with the Chukars pitching staff, as Orem erupted for 20 runs on 21 hits in a 20-6 Idaho Falls loss at Brent Brown Ballpark.

The Owlz pounced on Chukars starter Clayton Schulz for two runs in the first, before chasing the lefty with an eight run second inning. Orem wouldn't let up there either, as the Owlz scored one run in the fourth, seven in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

No Chukars pitcher escaped unscathed, with Alec Mills, Chase Hentges and Matt Strahm all allowing at least one run one. Mills proved to be the only moderately effective hurler, as he held the Owlz to one run on five hits over his 3.1 innings.

The Chukars offense meanwhile provided little resistance early, scoring only two runs through the first seven innings. The Greybirds would score twice in both the eighth and ninth frames, long after the game was decided.

A few Chukars bats did finish the night with good games, including Ethan Chapman who went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI, Jared Schlehuber who picked up his first professional homer going 2-3 with the 2-run blast, and Sam Bates who finished 2-4 with a double and two runs scored.

With the lopsided loss the Chukars drop a season low two games under .500 at 10-12, while the Owlz improve to 10-12. The Chukars, Owlz and Grand Junction Rockies are all now tied for second place in the Southern Division, four games back of the Ogden Raptors.

The Chukars will have their first off day of the season Tuesday, before beginning a seven game home stand against the Helena Brewers Wednesday at 7:15 pm.
