-SPIKES LOOK TO REBOUND IN VERMONT TONIGHT: The State College Spikes face the Vermont Lake Monsters in the second game of a three-game series tonight at Centennial FIeld in Burlington, VT, one night after going down to the Lake Monsters in the . The Spikes earned a three-game road sweep of Tri-City, to start the road trip, their first since June 25-27, 2007 against Batavia. State College holds the all-time series lead, 9-8, while Vermont has a 5-3 edge in games at Centennial Field.
-LAST GAME: Luis Heredia once again delivered a solid start for the State College Spikes, but the Vermont Lake Monsters took full advantage of a reprieve in the tenth inning and Chris Bostick's walk-off two-run home run set the Spikes down in a heartbreaker, 4-2, on Saturday night at Centennial Field. Heredia allowed two runs over five innings, but only one run was earned. The righty also gave up five hits and walk while fanning four batters. Vermont's victory came after Dayton Alexander eluded a tag at first on a close play that would have ended the inning, setting up Bostick's homer one pitch later.
-HOLMES LOOKS TO BOUNCE BACK TONIGHT: Right-hander Clay Holmes makes his fourth start of 2012 for the Spikes tonight, and his second on the road. The 19-year-old is coming off of an outing in which he took his first loss as a professional after giving up four runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks while hitting a batter and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings against Batavia. Holmes won each of his first two pro starts, going five innings each time.
-VAIL VENTURES TO MOUND FOR VERMONT : Right-hander Tyler Vail is slated to start for Vermont tonight. Vail is making his first start with the Lake Monsters in 2012 after starting the year with the Arizona League A's. -SPIKES MOUND STAFFERS START STRONG: Jason Creasy, Clay Holmes, Luis Heredia, Jake Burnette and Joely Rodriguez each have at least one start of five innings or more with two earned runs or less this year. State College's staff ERA of 2.87 is number one in the Pirates system.
