San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Modesto starting pitcher Leuris Gomez struck out eight and allowed just one run over 6 2/3 innings as the Nuts cruised to a 6-1 victory over the San Jose Giants on Friday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants lost two out of three games in the series as their second half record dropped to 7-9.
Gomez (3-4) earned the win after limiting San Jose to just three hits. Four Modesto pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the victory.
The Nuts jumped on Giants starter Taylor Rogers with single runs in the first and second innings to take the early lead. Rafael Ortega started the game with a single before Cristhian Adames drew a walk. Brett Tanos then grounded into a double play as Ortega was forced out at third, however Kyle Parker followed with an RBI single to right to put Modesto in front.
In the second, Mark Tracy led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third when Jayson Langfels grounded out and then scored on Ortega's sacrifice fly.
The Giants managed only one hit - an Adam Duvall single with two outs in the bottom of the first - over the first three innings against Gomez. San Jose's lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth as Andrew Susac started the rally with a one-out walk. Jarrett Parker then grounded a double down the left field line as Susac advanced to third. However on the play, Parker was thrown out at second after rounding the bag too far. The Giants though would still manage one run in the frame as Alex Burg followed with a single to plate Susac cutting the Nuts lead to 2-1.
Modesto got the run right back in the top of the fifth as Ortega singled with one out to break a string of 10 batters in a row that Rogers had retired. After Tanos walked with two outs, Parker singled sharply into right field plating Ortega to make it 3-1. A walk to the next hitter, Dallas Tarleton, loaded the bases, but Rogers limited the damage in the inning when he retired Jared Clark on a fly out to right.
Gomez set down San Jose 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings before the Nuts extended their lead with three more runs in the seventh against reliever Shawn Sanford. Back-to-back one-out singles from Tanos and Parker put runners on the corners before Tarleton's RBI groundout to second plated one run. Clark was up next and he crushed an 0-2 pitch from Sanford over the fence in deep left field. The two- run homer pushed the Modesto advantage to 6-1.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the eighth as three walks in the inning loaded the bases with two outs, however Nuts reliever Kraig Sitton induced Parker to groundout weakly to third base ending the inning. In the ninth, Kurt Yacko worked a 1-2-3 frame to end the game.
Rogers (6-7) suffered the loss for San Jose after pitching six innings with three runs (all earned) and six hits allowed. He walked a season- high five and struck out five. Sanford (1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) was charged with all three runs in the top of the seventh before Edward Concepcion (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
Gomez finished his outing by setting down the last nine Giants batters that he faced. No San Jose player recorded more than one hit in the game.
