RiverDogs Go into Turbo; Park the Drive, 3-2

CHARLESTON, SC - Cito Culver drove a two-out, RBI single to right field in the bottom of the eighth to give the Charleston RiverDogs a 3-2 win over the Greenville Drive in South Atlantic League action on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park with a season-high crowd of 7,192 on hand.

In taking the rubber game of the series, Charleston improved to 47-33 (8-5 in the second half) so far in 2012. Greenville, which took the first two games of the set, now stands at 40-43 (6-7 in the second half).

With a man on first, nobody out and Tyler Wilson (0-1) on the mound in the eighth, Reymond Nunez grounded into a fielder's choice, but ended up on second after a throwing error by shortstop Dreily Guerrero. Two batters later, Francisco Arica (2-4, RBI) singled to score Nunez and knot the score at two. Up next was Culver (2-4, RBI), whose clutch base hit gave the RiverDogs a lead they would not lose. Nick Goody made sure of that with a perfect ninth for his first save. John Brebbia (2-0) tossed three outstanding innings of shutout relief striking out seven for his second win of the year.

"Another great outing from Scottie Allen," said RiverDogs manager Carlos Mendoza. "The bullpen was fantastic again, four great innings from Brebbia and Goody, and we got some nice timely hitting late. That was a great win for us."

Charleston got on the board first with a run in the third inning, as they strung together three straight singles after Kelvin De Leon was hit by a pitch. Ali Castillo had the last single of the inning, which plated De Leon to break the scoreless tie. Keury De La Cruz immediately evened the score in the next inning when he jumped on a Scottie Allen offering and sent one way over the right field wall for a solo homer.

In the top of the fifth, Guerrero (2-3, RBI) put Greenville up by a run with an RBI single, scoring Henry Ramos, who led off the inning with a double. The Drive held that advantage until the eighth, when Charleston stole the lead and the game.

BALLPARK FUN: The standing room only crowd of 7,192 enjoyed a special Independence Day fireworks celebration that was the largest of the regular season. To help celebrate the holiday, RiverDogs' staffers adorned patriotic-themed attire for game.

COMING UP: The RiverDogs begin a five-game road trip to Savannah before returning on July 10 for an eight-game homestand. Charleston manager Carlos Mendoza has announced that right-hander Bryan Mitchell (5-6, 4.50 ERA) will start for the RiverDogs, while the Sand Gnats are expected to counter with righty Jacob DeGrom (3-2, 2.58 ERA).
