Connecticut Sweeps Vermont 8-0 And 9-6 In Doubleheader Monday

NORWICH, CT --- Juanar Aguasvivas and Patrick Smith combined to go 8-for-15 with three homers and 13 RBI as the Connecticut Tigers swept a New York-Penn League doubleheader from the Vermont Lake Monsters 8-0 and 9-7 on Monday night at Dodd Stadium

Smith gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning of game one and Aguasvivas added a two-run single in the third for a 3-0 advantage. After an unearned run in the fourth, Aguasvivas led off the fifth with his second home run of the season and Smith followed two batters later with a two-run homer. The Tigers capped off the four-run fifth with a Jordan Dean RBI single.

Vermont starter J.C. Menna (0-2) allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over four-plus innings, while Kurt Wunderlich was charged with two runs on four hits in two innings of relief. Tiger starter Edgar De La Rosa (1-0) alllowed the first two batters of the third and fourth innings to reach safely, but was able to work out of both jams to toss six scoreless innings on just three hits for the victory.

Lake Monsters jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning game two as Chris Booker tripled and scored on a RBI singe from Jacob Tanis, who later scored on a Bruce Maxwell RBI groundout. But the Tigers responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, including a three-run Smith double. Vermont tied the game 4-4 with a Chris Bostick RBI single in the second and a run-scoring wild pitch in the third. 

Connecticut scored three runs in the fourth on a Danry Vasquez RBI single and a two-run homer from Aguasvivas for a 7-4 advantage. Vermont cut the deficit to one as Bostick picked up his third hit of the game with a two-run single in the 6th, but Aguasvivas restored the three-run Tiger lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning for the 9-6 advantage.

Seth Streich (0-1), making his Lake Monsters debut, allowed three runs (two earned) in 1 2/3 innings of relief for the loss, while Tiger reliever Will Clinard struckout four in 2 1/3 hitless innings for the win. Aguasvivas was 2-for-3 with four RBI in the nightcap after 2-for-4 with three RBI in the opener, while Smith 2-for-4 with three RBI in both games for Connecticut (5-10).

Vermont (8-7) will look to salvage one game in the three-game series at Connecticut on Tuesday starting at 7:05 pm. The Lake Monsters then return home to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand beginning with a special 4:05 Fourth of July start time against the Hudson Valley Renegades.
