Drive Conclude First Half with 4-3 Win
June 17, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - The Drive (34-36) fell behind early Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. But backed by the long ball, Greenville finished the first half of the South Atlantic League's regular season on a high note, as they defeated the Augusta GreenJackets (32-37), 4-3.
The GreenJackets pounced on Drive starter Luis Diaz (1-3) in the bottom of the second, scoring three times - albeit only two of the runs were earned. Wes Hodges reached on Bryan Johns' error - having rejoined Greenville from Double-A Portland - to begin the frame, setting the wheels in motion for the home team.
After a single from Jose Flores, Augusta plated the game's first run on Jose Cuevas' RBI-double, and Jeff Arnold followed with a two-run single. The Drive wasted little time in beginning their comeback, scoring in the top of the third.
In what will be in his final game on rehab assignment from the Boston Red Sox, Jason Repko singled, moved to third on Garin Cecchini's base hit, and scored on David Renfroe's groundout.
Two innings later, it was Repko who delivered again, this time against GreenJackets' reliever Andrew Berger. Johns drew a leadoff walk, and on the first pitch Repko saw, he slammed the ball over the left-field wall to knot the game at 3-3.
In the top of the sixth Augusta elected to go with another reliever, Derek Law (5-1). With Henry Ramos up to bat and one-out in the inning, the results were the same as the outfielder sent a full count offering deep to right-field for a solo homer.
Following the setback in the second inning, Diaz was able to bear down and hold the GreenJackets scoreless over the final three innings of his outing, en route to his first victory of 2012. The right-hander surrendered just two more hits, both of which came in the bottom of the fourth, but was able to induce a double play to erase one of those.
Reliever Mike McCarthy continued the strong pitching effort, entering the game in the bottom of the sixth. The righty tossed 3.0 shutout innings, scattering a hit in each frame but never allowed the tying run to cross.
Tyler Lockwood allowed two baserunners in the bottom of the ninth, but secured the victory to earn his team-leading sixth save of the season.
Following the South Atlantic League All-Star game, the Drive begin the second half at home on Thursday, June 21st with a four-game set against the Charleston RiverDogs. Dollar Drink Night will kick-off the stint with the New York Yankees affiliate, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM.
