Roadrunners Split Series with CatsJune 11, 2012 - North American League (NAL) Edinburg Roadrunners
The scoring started with a bases loaded single from first baseman Gabe Memmert to tie the game at 1-1. Derek Marshall followed up with a sacrifice fly that scored right fielder RJ Harris and Randall Thorpe made it three scoring plays in a row with a double to knock in second baseman CJ Beatty.
"I think we turned it on at the right time thankfully," Memmert said, "we need to remember to play hard. Every inning, every out."
Beatty would go on to put two more up on the board to seal the game in the eighth inning on a single that scored Harris and shortstop Brandon Jones.
"We have offense that can deliver all the way through the lineup," Beatty said.
Beatty attributed his success to rubbing alcohol given to him by Memmert to rub on his back and "clean off all those nasty hits and nasty outs."
Fort Worth also relied on its hot pitching to go along with their hot bats in Saturday's win. Kane Holbrooks (0-1) pitched six innings and despite allowing eight hits, only allowed one run and struck out eight Roadrunners. Holbrooks was replaced with reliever Mace Thurman (2-0) who earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief. Thurman allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out one.
Jeff Jamnik, who is 6-for-6 in save appearances this season, came in to close out the ninth and gave the Cats yet another victory.
Edinburg's lone run was scored by leadoff hitter and right fielder Stantrel Smith who was responsible for four Roadrunner hits as well.
Starting pitcher Matison Smith went six innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Smith struck out four and walked two batters. Josh Walker, a new member to the Roadrunners, pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and allowed the other two runs on three hits.
The Cats improve their record to 12-5 and increase their lead over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to two games. The Roadrunners' record falls to 9-9 and they sit 3.5 games behind the Cats in fourth place.
Edinburg will travel to Abilene for a two game series with the Prairie Dogs that starts Monday night at 7:05, and then Abilene will come to Fort Worth for a three game series that starts on Thursday night at 7:05 as well.
The Cats head to San Angelo to play the Colts in a two game series before returning home. Tickets for their four game series versus Abilene, which begins Thursday, can be purchased online at www.FWCats.com or by phone at (817) 332-CATS.
