Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, TX - The game time temperature of 108 degrees carried over to a hot start for both teams at the plate, but it was the Prairie Dogs that were able to keep their bats hot after the first inning on their way to a 9-5 win over San Angelo.

The Prairie Dogs jumped out to a first inning lead thanks to a 2-run home run from RF Joe Weik. Adam De La Garza scored after he opened his Prairie Dog career with a walk to lead off the game. It was Weik's fourth home run of the season and first of three hits in five trips to the plate.

San Angelo responded with a 4-run first inning. With one out JJ Sherrill pulled a HR over the short porch in right-field. That began a string of six consecutive Colts to reach base safely against starter Braden Tullis. The last of which was a 2-run single by LF Jamar Walton to give San Angelo a 4-2 lead after the first inning.

Abilene responded with a 4-run inning of their own in the second. CF Jason Martin started the inning with a double then came in on Bryan Fogle's base hit. After Eddie Browne walked, C Gene Felise flied out for the first out of the inning; SS Adam De La Garza stroked a single to center to score Fogle. Browne later scored on a wild pitch by starter Steven Nikonchik. Later in the inning, Joe Weik drove in his 3rd run of the day with a base hit to right field that scored De La Garza for the second time.

De La Garza, making his Prairie Dog debut against his former team, went 3-4 with a walk. The Dallas, Texas native scored two runs and drove in three hitting in the leadoff spot.

Braden Tullis struggled out of the gate. He allowed five hits, two walks and four runs against the first 10 hitters he faced. Tullis then retired the next 10 hitters he faced before allowing a base hit to Daryl Jones in the 5th. In the 6th the Colts threatened with bases loaded and 2 outs but was able to escape further damage thanks to a terrific sliding grab by LF Bryan Fogle.

Braden finished 6 innings and gave up 7 hits 4 runs 3 walks and struck out 3 for his first win of the season.

San Angelo started reliever Steven Nikonchik after having two games rained out in their series with Ft. Worth. Nikonchik allowed six runs on five hits, three walks, and struck out two in two innings to take his first loss of the season.

The Prairie Dogs set a season-high with 9 runs in a game and banged out 10 hits on their way to their 7th win of the season.

The win denied San Angelo Manager Doc Edwards his 300th career win with the Colts.
