Burlington Bees News Release

BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (27-34) scored a run and loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but lost to the Quad Cities River Bandits (30-32) 6-to-3. The Bees led for the six innings, but allowed five runs late in the game and couldn't reclaim the lead in the ninth.

The Bees took the lead early in the game when B.A. Vollmuth launched a two-run home run over the leftfield wall with one out in the first inning. Vollmuth's bomb gave him six on the season, which put him one homer shy of leading the Bees in that category. Vollmuth can continue to call himself a team-leader in RBIs - he has an even 40 after Saturday night's game.

The two-run home run ended a 14-inning scoring drought for the Bees, but unfortunately the River Bandits stuck the Bees with another dry spell for seven innings.

The Bees held a 2-to-1 lead for six innings, mostly because Max Perlman was effective in his first start of the season. Perlman sur- rendered a run in the second inning, but otherwise avoided trouble and only allowed a total of three hits and one walk in five innings. Perlman looked great out of the pen to start the season and came into the game with the team's second best ERA with a 2.62 mark in 15 appearances. His five innings were the most in an outing this year.

Perlman (1-2) left in line for his second win of the season, but his bullpen couldn't hold off a formidable offense. The River Bandits lead the league in runs scored with 340 this season. Only one other team has more than 300 runs.

Jose Macias, Jeff Urlaub, and Drew Tyson combined to allow five runs (three earned) in four innings of relief. Macias blew his second save opportunity of the season and Urlaub (4-4) earned his second consecutive loss. The bullpen has allowed 13 runs in 11 innings pitched in the last three games.

The Bees tried to come back in the bottom of the ninth after Royce Consigli led off with his second double of the game. Aaron Shipman followed with a hit and Sean Jamieson drove in Consigli with a single. The Bees eventually loaded the bases and had Eliezer Mesa at the plate with two outs in the ninth. Mesa was 3-for-4 with three straight singles in centerfield before the at bat. The outfielder battled at the plate but eventually grounded out with the tying run at first base.

The Bees try to end a three-game losing streak when they host the River Bandits on Sunday for game two. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.

It's also Bark in the Park day at Community Field. The Des Moines County Humane Society and PAWS of North Lee County will be in attendance with dogs that are up for adoption. Fans are invited to bring their pups to the park as well.
