Lynchburg Returns the FavorJune 9, 2012 - Carolina League (CarL) Frederick Keys
The Keys dominated the opening game but could not get over the hump in a 3-2 defeat. Keys starter Scott Copeland labored through the first inning, walking three batters and hitting one in the inning. Lynchburg scored three runs on two hits sending nine men to the plate in the frame.
Trailing 3-1 to the second inning the Keys the Keys would have runners at second and third base with no outs after a double by SS Garabez Rosa. Up came 2B Mike Rooney who hit a slow groundball to first base. Mosby stayed at third base and Rosa ran getting in a rundown that led to a double play that would foil the rally.
In the fifth inning the Keys loaded the bases with one down but could not score. C Justin Dalles struck out and DH Scott Thomas grounded out to end the frame.
The game came to a climax in the seventh inning as the Keys had a run home and runners at the corners with one out. Dalles struck out and with Thomas batting he tipped strike two into the glove of the Lynchburg catcher. The runner at first base Aaron Baker was running with the pitch. Thinking it was a foul ball he walked off second towards first and was tagged out to end the game.
The Keys outhit Lynchburg 12-2 but fell in the contest 3-2. Copeland (3-5) did not allow another hit after the first inning in the complete game defeat. It was the first complete game by a Keys pitcher this season.
In Game two the Keys jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. RF Jeremy Nowak singled and after consecutive walks loaded the bases, LF Mike Flacco's SAC fly put the Keys on top 1-0.
But the bats went silent after that against RHP Aaron Northcraft who allowed just three hits in a complete game of his own.
Lynchburg tied the game with a two-out RBI-single by 1B Adam Milligan in the first inning and then took the lead in the third inning. 2B Emerson Landoni homered to LF to leadoff the inning. Lynchburg then got four consecutive baserunners to reach with two outs to bring home two more runs.
Keys starter Tyler Wilson (2-2) allowed four runs on eight hits in 3 and 1/3rd innings for the loss. RHP Kenny Moreland worked 2 and 2/3rd scoreless innings.
The Keys now close its five-game series Sunday, June 10th with LHP Rick Zagone on the hill. First pitch is slated for 2:05 p.m. with coverage starting 20 minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source.
