Belza, Silver Hawks Capitalize on Loons Follies

SOUTH BEND, INDIANA - Tom Belza hit a two-run inside-the-park home run Wednesday to cap off a three-run seventh inning as the South Bend Silver Hawks (30-29) held on to beat the Great Lakes Loons 5-4 in front of 1,110 fans at Coveleski Stadium.

Belza finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as the Silver Hawks sent the Loons to their sixth straight loss. It was Belza's second three-hit game of the season.

John Pedrotty (3-3) earned the win for South Bend, allowing two earned runs on five hits over seven innings. Arismendy Ozoria (3-3) got the loss in relief, allowing three unearned runs on two hits during the seventh inning. Willy Paredes tossed a scoreless ninth inning and earned his third save.

Josh Parr started the seventh inning with a two-out double to left-center. Next, Chris Ellison hit a fly ball on the infield that was dropped by Pedro Guerrero, allowing Parr to score all the way from second. Belza then hit a line drive to center field that got by the diving James Baldwin, resulting in an inside-the-park home run.

Right-hander Gustavo Gomez started for Great Lakes and got a no decision, allowing two earned runs on six hits over six innings. Gomez struck out three and walked three.

The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Roidany Aguila coaxed a bases-loaded walk. The Loons answered with two runs in the third inning to claim a 2-1 advantage - Angelo Songco tied the game with an RBI ground out and O'Koyea Dickson stroked an RBI single.

Gerson Montilla laced an RBI base hit to the opposite field in the third inning to tie the game 2-2.

Taylor Siemens worked the eighth inning out of the Silver Hawks bullpen. The left-hander allowed two earned runs - a two-run home run from Songco - on two hits in the inning. Siemens got out of the inning with the Silver Hawks clinging to a 5-4 lead.

Ellison finished 2-for-4 for South Bend. Songco was 1-for-4 with three RBIs for Great Lakes. The Silver Hawks and Loons resume the three-game series Thursday at Coveleski Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST. Right-hander Jesse Darrah (5-2, 4.03) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by left-hander Jarret Martin (2-4, 3.79).
