Walsh Named Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month

Third-year Quad Cities River Bandits utility man Colin Walsh is the St. Louis Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month for May. In 27 games in May, Walsh hit for a .366 batting average with six home runs, 19 runs and 25 RBIs for the Cardinals Class-A Midwest League affiliate.

A 22-year-old switch-hitter selected by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 2010 draft, Walsh is the first River Bandit to win Player of the Month honors since Oscar Taveras was Player of the Month last July, the same month Quad Cities right-handed pitcher Boone Whiting was honored as the Pitcher of the Month.

Among the highlights for Walsh in May were a nine-game hitting streak from May 11-20 and a 22-game on-base streak from May 4-30, both season-high streaks for the River Bandits. He homered in consecutive home games against Peoria May 5-6 and had his first career two-homer game May 6 at Modern Woodmen Park. In a series against Cedar Rapids May 26-29, Walsh had a hit in all five games, scored five runs, hit one home run and drove in 10 runs. He led the Midwest League with a .335 batting average through May 29.

Through the season's first two months, Walsh leads the Midwest League with 111 total bases, 35 bases on balls, a .620 slugging percentage and a .439 on-base percentage. His 12 home runs, 38 runs and 40 RBIs are all the second-highest totals in the league. He is tied for third with 26 extra-base hits, and his .324 batting average ranks fifth in the Midwest League.

Walsh has started 19 games in the outfield, five in the infield and 24 as the River Bandits designated hitter. In the first two months of the season, he has already set new career highs with 58 hits, 12 home runs, 26 extra-base hits, 111 total bases and 40 RBIs. He has tied his career high with 38 runs scored. His batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage are all the highest of his career.

A native of La Jolla, Calif., Walsh is in his third season in the Cardinals organization. He played for rookie-level Johnson City, short-season Batavia and Class-A Quad Cities in 2010, and was a member of the 2011 Midwest League Champion River Bandits in 2011.

Walsh attended Stanford University, where he played three seasons (2008-2010) and has completed both an undergraduate degree in management, science and engineering, as well as a master's degree in civil engineering.
