San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SAN JOSE, Calif. - San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Shea Salinas will wrap up the Spring 2012 Get Earthquakes Fit program presented by Kaiser Permanente with a closing ceremony on Friday, June 1 at San Jose's Lynhaven Elementary.

Salinas will be on hand from 1-2 p.m. PT to congratulate each of the participants in the five-week program and encourage them to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the summer break. He will also present completion certificates and sign autograph for each of the kids in attendance.

The Earthquakes and Kaiser Permanente are in the second year of a partnership to promote healthy living and active lifestyles amongst Bay Area youth. Get EQ Fit is a fun program designed by the Quakes' long-time head athletic trainer, Bruce Morgan, to increase physical activity in the classroom and at home. It is targeted toward underserved schools and schools lacking a physical education department due to budget cuts.

The program, which engages kids with 20 minutes of physical activity five days a week for five weeks, was integrated into third- and fourth-grade curriculums at local elementary schools. Additionally, teachers play a video featuring Earthquakes players demonstrating fun exercises and Kaiser Permanente physicians giving health tips each week in an effort to further educate and excite the students using a visual aid.
