
Hawks Pull Away Late, Oust Loons 6-2

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN - Matt Helm singled twice and knocked in three runs as the South Bend Silver Hawks (27-24) toppled the Great Lakes Loons 6-2 Monday afternoon at Dow Diamond. The Silver Hawks have taken two of three from the Loons to begin the four-game series.
Taylor Siemens (3-1) worked three scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen and earned the win, allowing four hits while striking out three. Mike Thomas (1-1) got pegged with the loss for Great Lakes and allowed three earned runs on three hits over one inning.
Tom Belza broke a 2-2 seventh-inning tie with an RBI infield single that scored Niko Gallego, who started the rally with a one-out double. After Gerson Montilla walked, Matt Helm added a two RBI double to right field to make it 5-2. Helm finished 2-for-5 and knocked in three runs for the first time this season.
Right-hander Tyler Green started for South Bend and got a no decision, allowing two earned runs on two hits over four innings. Jarret Martin started for Great Lakes and pitched a scoreless inning.
Roidany Aguila, Belza and Helm each recorded two hits for the Silver Hawks.
The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Ender Inciarte. The Loons tied the game in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from Pratt Maynard. The Loons took their only lead of the game in third inning on an RBI single from Angelo Sonco. Inciarte singled in a run in the fourth inning to even the score 2-2.
After Martin departed, Ralston Cash worked the next four innings out of the Loons bullpen. The right- hander allowed two runs - both driven in by Inciarte - on four hits over four innings. The Loons used five total pitchers in the game.
Seth Simmons worked a scoreless eighth inning for South Bend. D.J. Johnson struck out two and did not allow a run in the ninth inning.
Maynard recorded two hits for Great Lakes. Seven of nine Loons starters recorded at least one hit.
The Silver Hawks and Loons wrap up the four-game series Tuesday at Dow Diamond. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. J.R. Bradley (2-4, 5.63) gets the start for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Jose Dominguez (2-2, 5.09). The Silver Hawks return home on Saturday, June 2, to take on the Lansing Lugnuts.
