COLUMBUS - The surging Columbus Crew got first-half goals from Eddie Gaven and Emilio RenterÃ-a and extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Fire Saturday at Crew Stadium. The Crew (5-4-3, 18 pts.), winners of two straight and 3-0-2 in its last five, moved into a tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with Chicago.
Gaven scored in the ninth minute and RenterÃ-a followed in the 43rd for the halftime lead before a crowd of 16,024. Gaven wheeled after a pass from Shaun Francis, dribbled to the upper left corner of the penalty area and fired a near-post shot past Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
Shortly before halftime, RenterÃ-a scored his second goal of the season and second in as many games. After receiving Gaven's pass into the goal box, he shook his defender, turned and curled a shot around Johnson and into the far side netting.
Crew midfielder Dilly Duka cranked a shot off the crossbar in the 53rd minute and had a crafty service into the center of the box only to see Tony Tchani miss the mark with a header.
Chicago defender Austin Berry pulled one back in the 72nd minute with a powerful header from about eight yards off a cross from second-half substitute Daniel Paladini, but the Crew held on from there.
Both teams are in action again this Tuesday, May 29, in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Columbus host the Dayton Dutch Lions of the USL Pro which Chicago travels to face the Michigan Bucks of the PDL. If both MLS teams win, the Fire will host the Crew on June 5 at Toyota Park.
