Seattle Sounders FC News Release
Busy Week Kicks off with Columbus at Home, then a Visit to Chivas
Coming off a dramatic Cascadia Cup road draw Sounders FC returns home for the first of two games this week. Seattle hosts the Columbus Crew on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field, and then travels to Los Angeles to take on Chivas USA on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center.
Both matches will be televised live on KONG 6/16, and Wednesday's match will also be broadcast live out of market on ROOT Sports. Ross Fletcher and Kasey Keller will call the action, and can also be heard on 97.3 KIRO FM.
The games can be heard in Spanish on La Gran D 99.3 FM, and Saturday's match will be shown live in Spanish on KOMO2.
Sounders FC (7-2-2, 23 points) opened the first of six Cascadia Cup fixtures with a late 2-2 draw on the road at Vancouver last Saturday. Seattle's stars produced as Fredy Montero curled his team-leading fourth goal inside the post in the 90th minute to pull Seattle level for the second time. The first equalizer came 90 seconds after the break as Eddie Johnson hammered Mauro Rosales' cross past the diving 'Caps keeper.
Both Montero and Johnson recorded a goal and assist, and Montero now has four goals and two assists in his past five outings. Montero continued his dominate Cascadia Cup play as he has scored five goals with two assists in just five rivalry matches.
Sounders FC improved to 2-0-2 on the road this season, and hold the league's longest road unbeaten streak at nine games (7-0-2), dating back to July 30, 2011. With seven of the next 10 away from home Sounders FC hopes to continue its road success through the summer months.
The Rave Green will play two games this week for the third time this month, capping off the busiest stretch in club history in which the team will play nine games in 32 days (April 28 to May 29).
The action starts with a midweek matchup against the Columbus Crew (3-4-3, 12 points). The Crew sit seventh in the East but are unbeaten over the past three matches (1-0-2), conceding a late road draw in San Jose on Saturday.
Seattle has had great success against Columbus over the past three seasons, going unbeaten (3-0-3) in the six MLS meetings, and defeating the Ohio side in the 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final. Seattle has scored in all six meetings, winning 6-2 in front of the home crowd in the last matchup.
Three days later, Sounders FC visits southern California to face the new-look Chivas USA (4-6-1, 13 points) that added U.S. international Juan Agudelo as well as defender Danny Califf in a trade last week. Agudelo was recently called up to join the national team for friendlies ahead of World Cup qualifying this summer.
Chivas USA earned a 1-nil victory over rivals L.A. Galaxy in the SuperclÃÂ sico last Saturday. The Goats have rebounded from a three-game losing skid with a draw and win in the past week, and will look to continue the run in their match at New York on Wednesday.
Sounders FC will wrap up the month with a U.S. Open Cup contest next week. Seattle will play the winner of the Atlanta Silverbacks-Georgia Revolution match, which will be played in Conyers, Ga., on Tuesday, May 22 at 4:30 p.m. PT. Seattle will host if Georgia wins, and will visit Atlanta if the Silverbacks win.
The third-round fixture will kick off Seattle's run to an unprecedented fourth-straight Cup title - a feat never accomplished in the tournament's 99-year history. In 2011, Seattle became the first club in 42 years to win the Open Cup three consecutive years.
Tickets to home MLS matches are available through www.SoundersFC.com, all Ticketmaster Outlets, CenturyLink Field Box Office or by calling 877-MLS-GOAL.
The Late Show
Over the past three seasons Sounders FC and their fans have been committed to giving their full 90, and last Saturday provided further evidence. After falling behind for the second time Fredy Montero pulled Seattle level in the 90th minute to steal an all-important away point in the first Cascadia derby match of the season. The winner marked Seattle's first tally in the final 15 minutes this season, but the seventh in the final half-hour. In 2011 Sounders FC scored 15 goals in the final 15 minutes - far and away the league leader - and 26 goals in the final half-hour. Saturday's draw also marked the first comeback result for Seattle this season. The Rave Green led MLS last season with a 7-7-3 record when conceding first.
Bouncing Back
Sounders FC once again bounced back from a loss with the 2-2 result last Saturday, extending its unbeaten streak following a loss to nine games (7-0-2) over all competitions, dating back to July 30, 2011. Overall, Seattle is 18-10-9 coming of a loss in all competitions.
It has been 429 days since Seattle last lost two in a row (March 19, 2011), which is the longest current streak by any MLS team. The next longest streak belongs to the Chicago Fire at 310 days. The MLS record for time between losing two plus games in a row is three years and 207 days (1,302 total days) by San Jose from September 18, 2004 to April 12, 2008. Seattle has gone 4-0-4 following a loss in that span.
Montero the Man
Fredy Montero did it again, scoring a decisive goal in a derby match to further cement himself as the King of Cascadia. Montero controlled the ball at the top of the box, slipped past two defenders and slotted a curling shot inside the post. Montero has scored five goals with two assists in just five rivalry matches, and he now has four goals and two assists in his past five outings. Montero's strike was the fourth time he has scored in the 90th minute or later in league play, including his free kick at Toronto (June 18, 2011), his stoppage time winner against Chicago (August 28, 2010) and his late tally versus D.C. United (June 10, 2010).
EJ Strikes
Eddie Johnson's third goal of the season brought Seattle level just moments after halftime. After laying the ball off to Montero, Johnson made a run into the box where he met Mauro Rosales' cross with a strong header. Two of Johnson's three tallies this season were headers from a Rosales cross. Johnson has paired with Montero in seven games (five starts), resulting in 10 Sounders FC goals, including three goals and an assist for Johnson and four goals with two assists from Montero.
All the Right Moves
Not often are the Rave Green forced to make significant halftime adjustments, but when they do head coach Sigi Schmid makes the right moves. After a lackluster opening 45 minutes, Schmid inserted Andy Rose into the middle of the park alongside Osvaldo Alonso, and dropped Fredy Montero back to the midfield, creating a 4-2-3-1 attack with Eddie Johnson acting as the lone striker. It took the team just 90 seconds to score the equalizer after the break.
Schedule congestion and injuries have forced Schmid to test his depth early in the season, and he has done so with little hesitation. Seattle has had a different starting XI every game this season. Only four other teams (Dallas, Los Angeles, New England and Portland) have started a different group each game, with Seattle posting the only winning record. Schmid has started 21 different players - tied for the fourth-most in MLS. The squad rotation has resulted in positive results as 12 Sounders FC players have recorded a point this season (tied-sixth in MLS).
At Home on the Road
The late equalizer last Saturday salvaged a point for Sounders FC, and extended the club's nine game (7-0-2) road unbeaten run, dating back to July 30, 2011. The road undefeated streak is the longest active streak in MLS, and tied-second all-time for the longest such streak in league history. The top mark belongs to FC Dallas who went unbeaten in 12 straight road contests from May 1, 2010 to September 25, 2010. Seattle went 9-3-5 away from home in 2011 - the best road record in MLS - for the fourth-best road winning percentage in league history (.676). Seattle has earned the second-most points (81) on the road since 2009, two fewer than the league-leading L.A. Galaxy (83).
Team Road Undefeated Streak Leaders:
FC Dallas - 12 games from May 1, 2010 to September 25, 2010
Seattle Sounders FC - 9 games from August 6, 2011 to present
Real Salt Lake - 9 games from August 7, 2010 to April 9, 2011
Chicago Fire - 9 games from September 8, 2007 to May 25, 2008
Columbus Crew - 9 games from July 10, 2004 to October 16, 2004
Memories Abound
The series with the Columbus Crew has provided the Sounders FC faithful with several great memories, perhaps most notably the 2-1 Open Cup final win in 2010. Unbeaten (3-0-3) against the Crew in league play, Seattle has scored in all six meetings. The goals have come early and often for Sounders FC, scoring three of the fastest goals in club history (fourth minute) as well as two of the club's three hat tricks (Blaise Nkufo - 9/18/2010 and Lamar Neagle - 8/27/2011). Two of Seattle's largest margins of victory (four goals) have come against the Ohio side, including the 6-2 result in Columbus' last visit to Seattle, which saw a club record four first-half goals. Sounders FC has scored 10 of its 14 goals in the series in the first 45 minutes.
Road to the Cup: Seattle to Begin Title Defense Next Week
The 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is upon us as the 16 U.S.-based Major League Soccer clubs enter the tournament in the third-round next Tuesday, May 29 or Wednesday, May 30. Seattle's opponent, date and location will be determined tomorrow (May 22) in a second-round matchup between the Atlanta Silverbacks and Georgia Revolution.
The Revolution host the Silverbacks at RYSA Soccerplex in Conyers, Ga. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. PT.
If Georgia advances, Seattle will host the Revolution at Starfire Sports Stadium in Tukwila, Wash.
If Atlanta advances, Seattle will visit the Silverbacks at Atlanta Silverbacks Park in Atlanta, Ga. on Wednesday, May 30 at 4:30 p.m. PT.
The Georgia Revolution is a member of the National Premier Soccer League and was founded in 2010. The Atlanta Silverbacks belong to the North American Soccer League, the second tier of American soccer.
The 99th edition of the U.S. Open Cup includes a 64-team field, which represents the largest pool in the modern era (1995-present). All Division I, II and III professional clubs are participating in the tournament proper for the first time ever. The Division I field includes 16 MLS teams, which is double the representation from the past five years.
This year's tournament includes a random selection process for determining home teams from the first round through the quarterfinals among clubs that have applied to host. The process, conducted by a coin flip, gives participating teams with venues meeting tournament standards an equal chance at hosting their possible opponent for these rounds.
Sounders FC will attempt to become the first club ever to win four straight U.S. Open Cup championships. In 2011 Seattle became the first club in 42 years and fourth altogether to win the Open Cup three consecutive years. Sounders FC defeated D.C. United in the 2009 final, the Columbus Crew in the 2010 final, and the Chicago Fire in the 2011 final before a record crowd of 35,615 on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.
The quarterfinals are set for June 26, the semifinals for July 10, and the final for August 7 or 8.
2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Schedule (Per Round)
May 15: First Round
May 22: Second Round
May 29: Third Round
June 5: Fourth Round
June 26: Quarterfinals
July 10: Semifinals

Cup History: A Look Back at Championship Runs
The past three years have supplied countless memories for the Sounders FC faithful, and perhaps the greatest times have been had in the Open Cup tournament. The 2009 title run included Roger Levesque's first-minute goal at Portland followed by an unforgettable celebration, late goals from Nate Jaqua and Stephen King to advance past Houston in extra time, and an emotional win in the final at D.C. United. In 2010 Jaqua netted five goals in four games to earn Player of the Tournament honors, and Sanna Nyassi finished off the championship run with a brace in the final against the Columbus Crew. Last season it was Fredy Montero who stole the show, netting three game-winners in the final three matches, and Osvaldo Alonso put the icing on the cake with a wonderfully crafted goal in stoppage time in the final against Chicago.
Overall, Seattle has won 13 games with a lone draw in 2010 (advancing past Portland in the penalty shootout, 4-3), and has outscored its opponents 28-8.

Open Cup History in Seattle
A Seattle team has advanced to the Open Cup semifinals each of the last five years. Sounders FC won the title in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The USL-1 Sounders reached that stage in both 2007 (against FC Dallas) and 2008 (Charleston). Prior to the Sounders FC victory over D.C. United in 2009, the only Seattle club to qualify for an Open Cup final was the amateur Mitre Eagles in 1987. The Eagles fell to Club Espana of Washington, D.C., on penalties following a 0-0 draw. While the NASL Sounders did not participate in the Open Cup, the A-League Sounders competed on an annual basis, beginning in 1995. They lost to El Paso in the semifinals that season, and also advanced to the final four in 1996.

The Seattle Sounders FC formed a selection of world-class beach soccer players to take part in the Beach Soccer Club World Cup, which ended last weekend in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Lokomotiv ousted Flamengo in the final to claim the second annual Mundialito de Clubes. Sounders FC beat Sao Paolo, 3-2, in the first round but fell to Flamengo, 4-1, and FC Barcelona in a penalty shootout.

Recap: Sounders FC 2 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 - May 21, 2012
Fredy Montero scored the equalizer in the 90th minute to earn a 2-2 road draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the first Cascadia fixture of 2012. Seattle remains unbeaten (2-0-3) against Cascadia teams.
Seattle twice pulled level with second-half goals from Eddie Johnson and Montero. Johnson and Montero also recorded assists, along with Mauro Rosales.
Sounders FC (7-2-2, 23 points) extended its MLS-best road undefeated streak to nine games (7-0-2) and remains unbeaten (1-0-2) against the Whitecaps FC (5-3-3, 18 points).
In the 90th minute, Johnson headed the ball down to Montero who touched it twice, cut between two Whitecaps defenders and twisted a shot into the right side of the net. Montero now leads the series with three career goals against Vancouver, and has scored in all of Seattle's road Cascadia matches.
It was Montero's fourth goal of the season, tied for first on the team, and the Colombian striker has scored all 10 of his points (four goals, two assists) in the last five games.
Johnson opened the scoring for Seattle in the 47th minute to pull Seattle level, 1-1. Montero played to a wide-open Rosales in the corner, who accurately crossed to Johnson for a strong header. It was Johnson's third goal of the season.
With three points today, Johnson now has 102 points in his MLS career (44 goals, 14 assists). The assist today was his first for Sounders FC.
Rosales now has two assists on the season, both of which on Johnson goals.
Alain Rochat put Vancouver up 1-0 in the 12th minute when he dribbled up the left side and into the box unmarked, then slotted a shot past Bryan Meredith inside the far post. The goal was the earliest Seattle has conceded this season.
Vancouver's second goal came from Camilo in the 83rd minute, giving the Whitecaps FC a 2-1 advantage. He bent a free kick into the box that two Vancouver players lunged for and missed, but the ball bounced through and into the side netting. Camilo had come on Davide Chiumiento just three minutes earlier.
Sounders FC had a chance for a game-winner in stoppage time when a Montero found Zach Scott with a free kick, but the defender's header went wide.
After managing just two first half shots, Seattle finished with 11 total shots, five of which were on goal.
Seattle had two good chances around the 50-minute mark. Johnson headed the ball in the box to Montero, whose hard shot was saved by a diving Joe Cannon. Moments later, Cannon was forced to make another diving save when Montero got an open header in the box.
In the 57th minute, Montero took a hard shot from 25-yards out, but Cannon leapt to knock the ball over the crossbar.
Meredith kept Vancouver off the board in the eighth minute when he charged out and made a stop on Omar Salgado's feet after the 18-year-old striker got behind the defense.
About Columbus
The Columbus Crew are currently tied with the Montreal Impact for seventh in the Eastern Conference, totaling 12 points through the first 10 matches. The Crew have lost just once in the past five outings (1-1-3) after losing three of the first five to start the season. The Crew have been held scoreless four times and have scored multiple goals in three games. Columbus is 78-126-47 all-time on the road, going 1-2-2 this season, including a 1-1 draw at San Jose last weekend. Five of the teams nine goals have come between the 61-75 minute mark, and seven of the 12 goals allowed were conceded in the final 15 minutes of either half. The Crew have scored a league-low two goals on the road this season, and have not lost when scoring first (2-0-1).
Crew Notables
Coach Robert Warzycha's 4-4-2 attack has produced just nine goals this season, with no individual player scoring more than twice. Seven different Crew players have scored a goal, led by midfielder Eddie Gaven and forward Justin Meram with two apiece. Gaven, a 25-year-old veteran in his 10th MLS season, has totaled 44 goals and 31 assists in 244 career games. Meram, a first-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft out of Michigan, made his 2012 debut on May 5 at Portland and has played each game since, scoring a goal in the last two. Columbus is led in shots by Chilean midfielder Milovan Mirosevic (20) and Costa Rican forward Olman Vargas (14), both of whom have one goal in their first MLS season.
The Crew have seen two goals and four assists from defenders in 2012. Sebastian Miranda and Chad Marshall have each knocked in a goal, while Nemanja Vukovic leads the team with two assists. Nineteen different players have started a game for Columbus, with Mirosevic, Gaven and Miranda being the only three to start all 10 games.
Columbus Connections
Head coach Sigi Schmid served three seasons at the helm of the Crew, guiding Columbus to its first MLS Cup in November 2008. Schmid's Columbus teams were 34-33-25 and he was named MLS Coach of the year in 2008. Alongside Schmid, Seattle midfielder Brad Evans and assistant coach Ezra Hendrickson were on the 2008 Crew squad. Evans scored the game-winning goal for the Crew in a playoff semifinal win, and after two years in Columbus he was selected by Seattle in the Expansion Draft. Hendrickson played his final three seasons for the Crew before joining Schmid's coaching staff.
Chivas Series Notes
Seattle is 2-2-3 against Chivas USA in MLS play, having gone unbeaten in the last five meetings (2-0-3). The two sides are level with five goals apiece, and three matches have ended in a scoreless draw. Sounders FC is 1-2-1 against the Goats at The Home Depot Center, having won 3-1 in their last trip on October 22, 2011. Seattle also ousted Chivas from the 2010 U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 win in the semifinals.
About Chivas
Chivas USA is currently sixth in the West with 13 points through 11 matches. Three of the team's four wins have come on the road as the Goats have lost five of six home matches (1-5-0). Chivas has tied and won after losing three straight, and its seven goals scored is tied with Toronto for the fewest in the league. The team has started 23 players - the second-most in MLS.
Goats Notables
Coach Robin Fraser's club has struggled to score this season with a league-low seven tallies, and has started six different forwards this season. Colombian forward Jose Erick Correa, 19, leads the team with two goals, scoring in each of their last two matches. Veteran striker Juan Pablo Angel, who has 69 goals in over five MLS seasons, has one goal and is tied for the team-lead with 16 shots. Forwards Casey Townsend and Alejandro Moreno also have a goal this season, as well as midfielders Nick LaBrocca and Oswaldo Minda. LaBrocca started 34 games last season, scoring eight goals and six assists. Miller Bolanos and Ryan Smith lead the team with two assists apiece this season. Newly acquired striker Juan Agudelo will be unavailable Saturday due to U.S. National Team duties.
Chivas' back line has performed well this year, surrendering just 12 goals in 11 matches. Former-Sounder James Riley has started all 11 games and recorded an assist at San Jose on May 13. Ante Jazic and Rauwshan McKenzie have each started 10 matches, newly-acquired center back Danny Califf, and goalkeeper Dan Kennedy completes the veteran group. In 2011, Kennedy's first full year as a starter in MLS, he allowed 39 goals in 32 games.
Chivas Connections
Former Sounders FC defender James Riley joined Chivas USA in the offseason. The Montreal Impact selected Riley in the Expansion Draft and immediately dealt him to Chivas for Justin Braun and Gerson Mayen. Riley has played every minute for the Goats this season. In his three seasons with Seattle, Riley made 82 appearances. Sigi Schmid coached Robin Fraser for two seasons (1999-2000) at Los Angeles. Technical Director Chris Henderson played with Fraser for two seasons (2002-03) at Colorado. Schmid coached Alejandro Moreno at Columbus. Steve Zakuani (2007-08) played alongside Chivas' Ben Zemanski (2006-09) and Blair Gavin (2007-09) at the University of Akron.
