PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 14th through May 20th:
Akron Aeros third baseman Kyle Bellows has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 14th-May 20th. The 23-year old batted .391 (9-for-23) with three doubles, three home runs, nine RBI, four runs scored, two walks and a .913 slugging percentage in six games for the Aeros last week. Bellows, who is a native of San Jose, California, reached base in five games last week and had three multiple hit games, including going 4-for-5 and hitting a grand slam in Akron's 16-3 win over Richmond on Friday night at Canal Park. He followed that performance up by going 2-for-4 with a home run in a 15-5 victory against Richmond on Saturday night. The 6'2", 204 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in RBI (9), extra-base hits (6) and total bases (21) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in home runs (3-tied 1st), slugging percentage (.913-2nd), OPS (1.353-3rd), doubles (3-tied 4th), hits (9-tied 6th) and batting average (.391-9th). Kyle was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round of the 2009 draft after batting .389 (93-for-239) with 16 doubles, 10 home runs, 62 runs scored and 57 RBI in 59 games during his junior season at San Jose State University.
T.J. McFarland, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Akron Aeros, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 14th-May 20th. The 6'3", 209 lb. hurler started two games for the Aeros last week and had a record of 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched. McFarland, who is a native of Palos Hills, Illinois, made his first start of the week on Tuesday night at Erie and struck out six batters while allowing just three hits over seven shutout innings of work to earn the win for the Aeros in a 7-1 victory. In his second appearance of the week the 22-year old scattered 12 hits and gave up one run over seven innings to lead the Aeros to a 3-2 victory over Richmond on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park. He was able to limit the damage from the 12 hits he surrendered thanks to six strikeouts and four double plays while earning his league-best eighth win of the season and extending his winning streak to six straight games. T.J., who has posted a record of 8-1 with 36 strikeouts and a 1.79 ERA over 55.1 innings of work in nine starts for the Aeros this season, was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the fourth round of the 2007 draft out of Amos Alonzo Stagg High School in Illinois.
