Legends Take Third Straight over Kannapolis 7-1

May 20, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL) Lexington Legends

Luis Cruz pitched seven and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball and Matt Duffy had four hits as the Lexington Legends won their third straight over the Kannapolis Intimidators 7-1 Sunday in Kannapolis.

The Legends took the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning. Chan Jong Moon drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Delino DeShields Jr. and to third on a single by Jordan Scott. Moon scored on a ground out by Zach Johnson, and Duffy followed with a single, scoring Scott.

The Legends added another run in the sixth inning a leadoff double by Duffy and a two-out double by Drew Muren.

The Legends put the game away with three runs in the ninth inning. With one out, DeShields Jr. drew a walk. Scott singled for his third hit of the game, moving DeShields to second. Johnson's single brought home DeShields to make the score 4-0. Johnson leads the South Atlantic League with 46 RBI.

Duffy followed with a double, scoring Scott and sending Johnson to third, from where he scored on a single by Brandon Meredith. Mike Kvasnicka popped out, but Muren singled to bring in Duffy with the fourth run of the inning.

Kannapolis scored its only run in the bottom of the ninth on a double by Mark Haddow, a ground out and an infield hit by Collin Kuhn.

Cruz (4-1)earned his fourth victory. Euris Quezada finished the game and picked up his first save.

Kannapolis starter Miles Jaye (1-2) took the loss.

The Legends return home to face the West Virginia Power in a three -game series. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
