Fort Wayne Komets News Release
Fort Wayne, IN -- You had to know he was coming back. Some questioned it, but Komet veteran broadcaster made it clear at the Komets championship party and jersey auction Thursday night, May 10 at the Coliseum when he was standing at the auctioneer's stand and proceeded the auction with the announcement, "One more thing. I talked to Murph and I talked to my kids. With all of the exciting things forecast for the future, I'm going to make it for my 60th!"
And with that Bob Chase will be radio-rinkside for his 60th consecutive season behind the Komet microphone calling the action on Fort Wayne radio WOWO.
Mike "Doc" Emrick, famous NHL television play-by-play announcer now for NBC Sports, often gives Chase the credit for the inspiration to make a career out of hockey play-by-play. "I met Bob in the fall of '67 when he agreed to do an interview with me for college," Emrick said. "I am lucky to have known Bob Chase for a number of reasons. Especially in your early years, while you are trying to find your style, I could copy someone who used good English, used the hockey vernacular and whose voice rose and fell with the action. I am lucky to know someone who believes strongly about the sport and about life in general."
Chase, born in Negaunee, Michigan, Jan. 22, 1926, began his career in 1953 with the Komets when he moved to Fort Wayne to start a radio career with WOWO AM 1190, which included broadcasting Komet hockey games. The Komet Hall-of-Famer continues to reside in Fort Wayne with his wife Murph and will enjoy another summer of his semi-retirement traveling the roads of the USA and Canada in his fifth wheel of fun until the Komets are ready to begin the 2012-13 campaign in the fall. Come October, Chase will be ready to bring fans the action of Komet hockey on the radio one more time.
The Komets will open their 61st season of play in Fort Wayne in October as a proud member of the ECHL. 2012-13 will carry a 72-game schedule including 36 home games and 36 road games and will be announced in the coming weeks.
Season tickets are on sale at the Komet office, 1010 Memorial Way, Fort Wayne. For information visit www.komets.com, or call 260-483-0011.
