Burlington Bees News Release
PEORIA, Illinois (5/15/12) - For the fourth straight day a Burlington Bees starter gave the team a great outing, but the offense failed to provide much support. The Peoria Chiefs (18-21) handed the Bees (17-21) their fourth straight loss with a final score of 2-to-0 in game four.
The Chiefs came into the series with one of the worst records in the Midwest League. But the Bees couldn't retain the offensive explosion they had in the last two games of a home series with Cedar Rapids; the Bees had 20 runs in two games, and then followed with five runs in four games. The Chiefs now sit a half-game ahead of the Bees in the standings.
The Bees asked Drew Granier to help stop the bleeding and lead the Bees to a win in game four. Granier had a rough outing in his last start, but still took the win, which left him tied for first in the Midwest League in the win column.
Granier looked good throughout a tie for his season--high, seven innings. The right-hander surrendered seven scattered hits and walked four batters in his seven innings. He gave up a total of two runs with only one of them being earned and struck out six batters.
The Chiefs' leadoff man Zeke DeVoss was the only batter Granier consistently had trouble retiring. DeVoss reached in all four plate appearances and finished with a 2-for-2 game with two singles and two walks. DeVoss also stole four bases, including two in the first inning that allowed him to score the first run of the game on a throwing error by the Bees' catcher Nick Rickles. DeVoss scored another run in the top of the bottom of the third and gave the Chiefs a 2-to-0 lead.
Once again the Bees had trouble at the plate. The team only had five hits in nine innings and let a struggling Ge- rardo Concepcion pitch his best game for the Chiefs.
For the third straight game, the Bees wasted a bases loaded opportunity. The Bees ended the game two and three with the last man watching strike three go by with the bases loaded. The Bees loaded the bases in the sixth inning and with one out, Dusty Robinson and Nick Rickles committed two more outs to end the inning.
The Bees play in Wisconsin on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. For information on the Bees schedule, call (319) 754- 5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
