PEORIA, Illinois (5/14/12) - The Bees mounted an exciting comeback in the top of the ninth inning, but for the second consecutive day the Bees left the bases loaded to end the game. The Bees (17-20) lost 2-to-1 to the Peoria Chiefs (17-21) on Monday night.

The Bees have lost three consecutive games; all three have been close games in Peoria to another team below .500 this year. The Bees lost game one 2-to-1 and 5-to-3 in game two. The Bees are now three games below the .500 mark.

Jonathan Joseph made his eighth of start of the season on Monday. Joseph had a horrendous outing in his previous start and gave up 12 runs (five earned) in three innings. The defense let Joseph down in that start and committed a total of four errors. But on Monday night defense was perfect and Joseph battled through five innings and only allowed one run on five hits and four walks. Joseph also had five strikeouts and for the second straight day, a Bees starter struck out three batters in the first inning.

The Bees finally managed to get on the board first and scored the first run of the game in the top of the third in- ning. Sean Jamieson hit a double with one out and stole third base to move into even better scoring position. B.A. Vollmuth came into the game hitting .325 with nine RBIs in the previous ten games. In the third, Vollmuth im- proved on his already impressive .462 average with runners in scoring position and two outs; the slugger dropped a broken-bat single into right to deliver the first and only run the Bees would score.

But the Bees asked for too much from Joseph. The right-hander gave up the 1-to-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when he allowed a run to score. Nate Kilcrease (1-1) allowed the eventual winning run to score his second inning of work. After the seventh inning, the Bees trailed 2-to-1 and took that deficit into the ninth.

The first two men reached in the top of the ninth. After loading the bases with two outs, the Bees sent their number one and two hitters in the lineup to the plate with the tying run only 90 feet away. But both Sean Jamieson and Bobby Crocker struck out looking. Crocker's strike out made it the second straight game the Bees left the bases loaded after watching strike three cross the plate to end the game.

The Bees play game four on Tuesday at 11 a.m. For information on the Bees schedule, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
