D.C. United News Release
(Boyds, Maryland) A better than expected 1022 fans packed the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday evening to see D.C. United Women fall 1-0 at the hands of the Boston Breakers in their final preseason exhibition match before kicking off official W-League play next Saturday against the Virginia Beach Piranhas.
Kickoff on Saturday May 19, at 7:00 p.m., tickets on sale at http://tickets.dcunitedwomen.com.
Boston's Kyah Simon netted a close-range goal in the 56th minute off a cross by Jessica Lusciniski to account for all of the scoring on the evening as United Women were held to five total shots with four coming on target. Newcomer Holly King led United's offense with two shots on goal.
"I thought we needed to relax a little more, play our game and stop turning the ball over," said Assistant coach Cindi Harkes on United Women's struggles. "I think there were some nerves because it was the first game of the season against a quality team, but I think we'll come together and figure out what we need to do to get better."
Meanwhile, the Breakers found a rhythm on offense, particularly in the second half when they racked up six shots on target. They had 15 total shots, nine on target, and held possession for the majority of the contest. However, they were unable to add to their lead because of the stellar play in net by United Women goalkeeper Didi Haracic. The Loyola (Md.) starting keeper made seven saves on eight shots by the Breakers, and was pulled in the 80th minute to a rousing ovation from the Black-and-Red faithful.
"Didi's performance tonight was phenomenal," said Harkes, who filled in as head coach for the match with Mike Jorden away on family business. "She was outstanding and was able to keep us in the game with some very athletic saves."
Simon was the story of the match for Boston, leading all players with seven shots, five of which were on target. The Australian and the Breakers will return home after a successful trip to the D.C. area- they won 3-0 against the Chesapeake Charge on Thursday night in their league opener.
United Women have a week to rebound, recover and prepare for the regular season W-League opener at the Maryland SoccerPlex on May 19, where an even bigger crowd is expected for their first-ever meeting with Virginia Beach Piranhas. The match will begin at 7 p.m., box office and gates open at 6 p.m. Tickets on sale at http://tickets.dcunitedwomen.com.
