San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants scored five runs over the first three innings en route to a 5-2 win over the Visalia Rawhide on Friday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 5,022 fans at Municipal Stadium. Ryan Lollis hit a two-run homer while Jack Snodgrass threw six effective innings to lead the Giants to the victory. The win improved San Jose's overall record to 23-13 - two games ahead of the Bakersfield Blaze (20-14) for the top spot in the first half North Division race.
Lollis' (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) first home run of the season was part of a two-hit night while Adam Duvall (2-for-3, 2 2B, RBI) and Luke Anders (2-for-4) also finished with multi-hit games at the plate for the Giants.
Snodgrass (4-1) picked-up the win after allowing just two runs (both earned) on five hits during his stint on the mound. The left-hander issued two walks and struck out four. Hector Correa recorded the save with three scoreless innings of work to end the game.
San Jose jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning against Rawhide starting pitcher Anthony Meo. Joe Panik began the rally when he reached on an error with one out. After Lollis singled to put runners on first and second, Ricky Oropesa grounded a single to left plating Panik with the first run of the night. Duvall then lifted a sacrifice fly to center making it 2-0.
Snodgrass faced the minimum six hitters over the first two innings tossing a 1-2-3 top of the first before using a double play to work around a leadoff walk in the second. Visalia struck for a run in the top of the third cutting the Giants lead to 2-1 as Eric Groff drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on Chris Valencia's groundout and scored on Ryan LaPensee's two-out single to center.
San Jose though responded with three runs in the bottom of the third against Meo to extend their lead to 5-1. Panik hit the first pitch of the inning down the right field line for a double before Lollis stepped to the plate and lined a two-run homer to right. Then with one out, Duvall doubled to the right center gap and scored two batters later on Dan Burkhart's bloop single to shallow left center.
Snodgrass surrendered a single run in the top of the fourth as Jon Griffin belted a one-out RBI double to deep left center bringing the Rawhide to within 5-2. Snodgrass though settled down to retire the next seven batters until allowing a two-out single to Owings in the sixth. Griffin followed with a single of his own to bring the potential tying run to the plate, however Snodgrass induced Bobby Borchering to groundout ending the threat.
Correa entered the game to begin the top of the seventh and quickly set down Visalia 1-2-3 in his first two innings of work. In the ninth, Owings led off with a single, but Correa recovered setting down Griffin on a fly out to right before Borchering struck out and Raywilly Gomez grounded out to seal the victory. Correa, who retired nine out of the 10 batters that he faced, allowed just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts during his outing.
Meo (1-3) suffered the loss for the Rawhide after surrendering five runs (three earned) on eight hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out four. Bradin Hagens (2 IP) and Jeremy Erben (2 IP) combined for four scoreless innings out of the Visalia bullpen.
