Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Adelanto, CA - Mike Pericht capped a six-run eighth with a go-ahead two-run homer, then added an RBI single in the ninth, as the Quakes rallied from a five-run deficit, then held on to defeat High Desert on Friday night, winning a 13-11 shootout in Adelanto.
Pericht finished the game 4-for-4 with three RBIs, helping the Quakes win their second straight overall and trim High Desert's lead over Rancho in the South Division to just two games.
Trailing 9-4 in the eighth, the Quakes went to work on the Mavs' bullpen. Leon Landry singled off of Jonathan Arias to open the inning. Arias then hit Nick Akins with a pitch, before walking Brian Cavazos-Galvez. With Austin Gallagher due up next, the Mavs went deeper into the bullpen, bringing righthander Carson Smith into the game. Gallagher ripped a 3-1 pitch over the right-center field fence for his second grand slam of the year, as his eighth homer pulled the Quakes to within one at 9-8.
Smith followed up by striking out C.J. Retherford for the first out of the inning, but then walked Chris O'Brien, bringing Pericht to the plate. Pericht hit a monster shot to left field for his fifth home run of the year, putting the Quakes in front 10-9.
The Quakes went back to work on Smith (2-1) in the ninth, piling on with three more runs. Cavazos-Galvez got a two-out rally started with a triple to left, then scored on Gallagher's RBI single, making it 11-9. Retherford and O'Brien then followed with singles, with O'Brien's plating Gallagher to make it a three-run lead at 12-9.
High Desert went to the bullpen yet again, calling on Angel Raga to work to Pericht, who responded with another hit, an RBI single to make it 13-9.
Bret Montgomery was brought on to try and get the final three outs, but walked the lead-off hitter and then coughed up a two-run homer to Mario Martinez, as the Mavs made it a 13-11 game. Montgomery struck out Kevin Rivers for the first out of the ninth, but then was removed with lefthander Brad Miller due up next. Newcomer Eric Eadington, a lefty, followed out of the Quakes' pen and impressed in his Cal League debut. Eadington got Miller to fly out to left, then struck out Jack Marder to end the game, earning his first save.
The Quakes actually had an early 4-0 advantage, thanks to a four-run second, but Quakes' starter Angel Sanchez had trouble holding onto the lead, as he surrendered a total of seven runs, including three homers in six-plus innings, as High Desert built a 7-4 lead.
Greg Wilborn (1-0) followed Sanchez and gave up a pair of runs in the seventh, but thanks to the eighth-inning offensive explosion, earned his first win of the year.
Rancho (17-19) is now 3-2 on the current road trip and looking for their second series-sweep of the year on Saturday, as they send Zach Lee (2-2) to the mound. Trying to avoid the sweep, the Mavs will go with lefty Roenis Elias (3-0), with game time scheduled for 7:05pm.
The Quakes will take Sunday off, then return to The Epicenter on Monday, May 14th, as they host the Lancaster JetHawks in the opening game of a six-game home stand. Great seats are available at 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at The Epicenter...Go Quakes!
