Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - Making up the game that was postponed at Fluor Field on April 22nd, the Drive and Augusta GreenJackets engaged in a doubleheader Friday at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Needing an extra frame in game one, the GreenJackets (16-17) captured a one-run victory before Greenville (15-19) exploded for 11 runs in the second game to split the twinbill.
Scheduled to play seven innings in both games, the first contest required an extra inning of play as Augusta earned a 2-1 walk-off win. The Drive and GreenJackets traded the game's only runs in regulation in the second inning. Boss Moanaroa led off the top of the inning with a solo homer against Chris Marlowe. Augusta quickly answered as Brett Krill tallied a two-out, RBI-single.
The game would remained knotted at 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth, when Krill singled off Nefi Ogando (0-3) to lead off the frame and John Eshleman followed with a double. With the infield drawn in, Krill was able to beat the throw home when Carlos Willoughby grounded to Bryan Johns at second base.
While his hit streak came 12-game hit streak came to an end in game one, Keury De la Cruz more than made up for it in the nightcap, tallying three hits and driving in six runs as the Drive recorded an 11-4 win.
Trailing 2-0 heading to the fifth inning, Greenville sent 10 batters to the plate en route to scoring five runs. All of the runs came with two outs in the inning, as De la Cruz knocked the Drive's first run with an RBI-single. David Renfroe added a two-run single of his own, and Henry Ramos collected an RBI-double.
Eight more batters stepped up to the plate in the top of the sixth with Jordan Weems, Nick Natoli and Johns all singling to begin the frame and load the bases. On the first pitch that De la Cruz saw from Keith Bilodeau, he deposited it over the outfield wall for a grand slam.
Johns and De la Cruz each laced an RBI-double in the top of the seventh to cap Greenville's scoring.
Allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits and a walk over five innings, Scott Swinson (1-0) earned the victory in the second game of the doubleheader, making his first start with the Drive. The right-hander struckout three before Hunter Cervenka tossed a perfect seventh to finish the game.
The Drive and GreenJackets continue their series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Southpaw Henry Owens (2-1, 6.17 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Augusta counters with right-hander Kyle Crick (1-1, 1.66 ERA).
The Drive return home on Monday, May 14th for a seven-game homestand, beginning with the Asheville Tourists. The Drive and Michelin will celebrate the Reading All-Stars from Greenville County elementary schools, and Pickens County elementary and middle schools during the home stand opener.
