Generals Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Just Short

JACKSON, TENN. (MAY 7, 2012) - Generals short stop Nick Franklin missed a game tying home run in the ninth inning by mere inches, settling for a 2-run double. Two batters later, Chris Pettit grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game and Jackson (20-12) fell to Huntsville (18-15) on Monday night, 6-5. The Generals allowed six runs for only the second time in 2012. (The last being a 9-2 loss to Birmingham on April 8). The Generals lead Huntsville by two games in the division.

The Generals used five relievers Monday and starter Steve Garrison (1-1), making his first appearance since coming off the DL suffered the loss. Garrison allowed one run over 2.2 innings. Tyler Thornburg (4-0) picked up the win for Huntsville allowing two runs and striking out seven over six innings.

Huntsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on the first home run of the season by Juan Sanchez. The Stars made it 3-0 by adding a 2-RBI single from Domnit Bolivar.

Jackson trimmed the deficit to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by Eric Campbell in the bottom of the fourth inning, his third RBI in the last two games. Quickly in the fifth, Huntsville's Matt Cline hit his first homer of the season and made it 4-1.

Kalian Sams homered for the first time this season, in the bottom of the fifth inning making it 4-2.

In the ninth, trailing 6-2, Francisco Martinez delivered an RBI double against reliever Eric Marzec making the score 6-3. With two runners on Nick Franklin hit the 2-run double against Robert Wooten that scored two making the final 6-5. Wooten intentionally walked Joe Dunigan then got Chris Pettit to hit into a game ending 6-4 fielder's choice.

Nick Franklin led the Generals with a 3-for-5 night including two doubles and two RBI's. Nick upped his average to a team leading, .314 mark.

The Generals continue the five-game series Tuesday at Pringles Park against the Huntsville Stars, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. LHP James Paxton (3-0, 2.51) will take the mound for Jackson against RHP Evan Anundsen (1-1, 2.63) for Huntsville.
