Murray Added to Roster, Plays for CanadaMay 4, 2012 - Western Hockey League (WHL) Everett Silvertips
Murray played 17:09 of ice time and finished with a +1 rating in the victory while mostly pairing with Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks. Murray became the second-youngest player ever to suit up for the Canadian Men's National Team in the World Championship tournament, with only Paul Kariya skating as a younger 18-year-old in 1993.
Murray was originally expected to participate in Canada's pre-tournament competition camp in Switzerland and play in exhibition games, but not accompany the team to Finland for the start of the tournament. Injuries to P.K. Subban of the Montreal Canadiens and Marc Methot of the Columbus Blue Jackets opened the door for Murray's debut in a men's international event, just months after he was Canada's youngest player at the World Junior Championships. The Silvertips' captain and 2011-2012 Most Valuable Player is the only non-NHL player on Canada's active roster.
Next up for Team Canada is a showdown with Team USA on Saturday, followed by a game against France on Monday. Preliminary round games continue through May 15 and will be followed by the quarterfinals, semifinals and finally the medal-round games on May 20.
Murray is no stranger to donning the Maple Leaf for Team Canada, having competed in this year's World Junior Championships, the 2010 and 2011 Under-18 World Championships and the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The White City, Saskatchewan native is projected to be among the first players chosen in next month's NHL Entry Draft after being ranked second among all eligible North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
