Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO, April 25, 2012 -The Chicago Sky has signed 6-1 forward Lykendra Johnson to a training camp contract, Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman announced today. Per team policy, terms of the contract are not disclosed.
Johnson, an undrafted free agent from Michigan State University, averaged 10.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in her senior season at Michigan State to lead the Spartans to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. She was a three time all-Big Ten selection in her collegiate career and won the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award in 2011, her junior season.
"Lykendra caught our eye as a junior with her tenacious ability to rebound the ball," said Chatman. "She is a talented and versatile player. As well as she scores and rebounds, Lykendra is a premiere defender and her accolades are well deserved. We are looking forward to having her in camp and providing great competition up front."
After competing in 131 games for the Spartans, Johnson finished 11th all-time at Michigan State in scoring with 1,242 points, second all-time in rebounds with 1,018, third all-time in blocks with 147 and fourth in steals with 224. She is also only the fifth Big Ten student athlete ever to have reached 1,000 points, 900 rebounds, 200 steals and 100 blocks in her career.
A native of Chicago, Johnson played for Trinity High School in River Forest, Illinois, where she was ranked among the top ten forwards in the country her senior season.
