BURLINGTON, Iowa (4/24/12) - A crowd of 2,622 fans attended Kid's Day at Community Field, but watched the Burlington Bees (9-10) fall lose 11-9 to the Great Lakes Loons (10-9). The Bees had 17 hits and scored nine times, but couldn't finish a great comeback in the ninth.

The Bees got the crowd involved by scoring Chad Oberacker on a sacrifice fly ball from John Nester. The offense looked good after the first and tallied one run and two hits.

Right-hander Raul Alcantara started for the Bees and looked most fine through three innings, but failed to miss enough bats deeper into his outing. Alcantara gave up three consecutive hits with one out in the top of the second that allowed Pedro Guerrero score the first run of the game for the Loons.

The Bees responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and led 3-1 after three innings. But the fourth inning truly hurt the crowd's enthusiasm as Alcantara loaded the bases three straight hits, and then allowed another hit, and ended his outing by giving up a grand slam to Loons first baseman Joe Winker.

Alcantara pitched 3.1 innings and gave up eleven hits, six earned runs, a grand slam, and took the loss. Max Perl- man and Jeff Urlaub also pitched several innings the rest of the game and both gave up runs. Perlman gave up three earned runs in the seventh to extend the Loons' lead to 9-4 after seven innings. Urlaub came into the game with opposing hitters only hitting .083 off the lefty. But Urlaub couldn't fend off the Loons' offense in the ninth and gave up two runs. The Loons led 11-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Suddenly the Bees' lineup woke up and put together a valiant effort in the bottom of the ninth. B.A. Vollmuth led off the ninth with a walk and quickly found home plate when the next hitter, Dusty Robinson hit a two-run homerun over the leftfield wall. With two outs and a runner on second, the Bees strung three straight hits together and scored three times. The comeback fell two runs short when Vollmuth batted for the second time in the ninth inning and popped out to the catcher with two runners on base. Overall the Bees scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but lost 11-9.

The Bees couldn't finish the sweep in front of the largest crowd at Community Field this season, but look to string together a few wins on the road. The Bees visit the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Wednesday to start a six-game road trip. For information on the next home stand, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com.
