Frederick Keys News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Generating just one run on two hits, the Keys were shut down by Myrtle Beach Pelicans' starter Cody Buckel who struck out eight batters through 6.1 innings and gave up just one hit.

Coming into Monday's game, Buckel, at just 20 years old, had given up just one run through 15 innings of work. Giving up just one earned run to the Keys, that trend continued, as he frustrated the Keys bats all night long.

Buckel's dominant pitching performance put the Keys at 6-8 on the year.

Starting pitcher Kyle Simon was charged with the loss after going five innings and giving up four earned runs.

With the Keys struggling to get on base against Buckel, the Pelicans took a one-run lead in the third after Jared Hoying reached on an error and advanced into second on a stolen base. An sac-fly RBI from Jake Skole gave the Pelicans a lead they never surrendered.

The Pelicans blew the game open in the next inning by tacking on five runs to take a commanding 6-0 lead. After two batters reached base via an error and walk, Odubel Herrera hit the first runner home with a single. After a fielder's choice RBI from Hoying made it 3-0, Christian Villanueva belted the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for a three-run homerun to put the Pelicans up for good.

With the Keys struggling for offense, they were never able to climb their way back in the game, ultimately losing 7-1.

The Keys look to even the series tomorrow when RHP Scott Copeland (1-0, 0.54 ERA) takes the mound. He'll face RHP Roman Mendez (1-1, 4.70 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and live coverage starts at 6:45 on 1450 AM The Source and online at WTHU.org.
