Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - Using season-highs of 12 runs and 16 hits, the Fort Wayne TinCaps cruised to a victory over the Kane County Cougars Friday night by the final of 12-1. The Cougars led 1-0 at the end of one inning, but the TinCaps relentless attack carried the team to a series-tying victory. Cody Hebner pitched five innings for the win, and four Fort Wayne players recorded multi-RBI efforts in the win. Travis Whitmore led the way going 4-5, scoring three runs while knocking in three.

Hebner (2-0) allowed five hits during his outing, and four of them were in the first inning. Orlando Calixte singled home the only run that the league's leading offense would score on Friday night. After the first inning, Hebner settled in, allowing just one hit over the next four frames. He walked two and struck out four.

Fort Wayne (5-10) scored two runs in the second inning on a Matt Colantonio two-run single. The backstop has now recorded at least one hit in each of the seven games in which he has appeared in 2012. Batting with the bases loaded in the third, Colantonio drew a walk, which was his third RBI of the game, and put the TinCaps in front 3-1. In the fifth, Whitmore plated two of his teammates to push the advantage to 5-1.

Following a scoreless fifth worked by Hebner, Fort Wayne's Matt Wisler entered and fired a scoreless sixth.

The seventh inning was the most productive of the night for Fort Wayne. Justin Miller led off with a triple, and Casey McElroy followed with an infield single. Whitmore singled Miller home, and McElroy advanced to second on the play. Duanel Jones then walked, which loaded the bases for Kyle Gaedele. Facing Kane County's Matt Ridings, Gaedele lined a triple to center field, clearing the bases and extending the TinCaps' lead to 9-1. Gaedele would later score on a wild pitch, and the score was 10-1 at the end of seven innings. A Jones single sent two more runners across the plate in the 8th, setting the score at 12-1.

Miller and Whitmore finished with three-hit performances, and McElroy had two hits as well. Whitmore and Gaedele plated three runs, and Jones, along with Colantonio, had two runs batted in. The team's 12 runs were a season-high, as were the 16 hits. A 7-for-11 mark with runners in scoring position was also a season best.

Wisler, Luis De La Cruz and Matt Stites combined for four innings of scoreless, one-run baseball out of the Fort Wayne bullpen.

The TinCaps and Cougars finish their three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Frank Garces is scheduled to throw for Fort Wayne against Kane County's Jason Mitchell. A win would give the TinCaps their first back-to-back wins of the year and it would be the team's first series victory in five tries. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 2:00 eastern.
