Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS -The Sioux Falls Pheasants brought back a familiar face on Thursday. Manager Steve Shirley announced the return of last season's designated-hitter/outfielder Mark Shorey.

Last season was Shorey's first venture into independent baseball with Sioux Falls after five years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. The 27-year-old batted .283 with 11 home runs. His 64 RBI were third best on the team behind Brandon Sing and Reggie Abercrombie.

Shorey finished strong in 2011. In August, he led the club with 25 RBI, had a seven-game hitting streak and collected his 500th professional hit.

Shorey's previous two years were with the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds, one step away from the major leagues. He reached that level in part because of his 2009 season with Class AA Springfield, where he hit .304 with 11 home runs and 66 RBI. The Peabody, Mass., native was a 31st round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006.

For his career, Shorey has hit .284 with 60 home runs and 301 RBI.

The Pheasants roster now stands at 17 players, with 10 pitchers and seven position players.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants begin their 20th-anniversary season at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 when they host the Sioux City Explorers. Information about season tickets and group outings is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
