San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes improved on their best start to a season in club history with a 3-1 comeback win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front of a franchise-record eighth-straight sellout crowd of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.
The win marks the best start for San Jose (4-1-0, 12 pts.) after five games in club history. The match was also the first comeback win at home after allowing the first goal since July 23, 2005, when the Earthquakes defeated the MetroStars 2-1 at Spartan Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Vancouver (2-1-2, 8 pts.) netted the go-ahead goal in the 49th minute on a throw-in from Jordan Harvey, as Eric Hassli played it back for Sebastien Le Toux to finish in the box. However, the lead was short-lived.
Chris Wondolowski scored his first of two goals in the 68th minute, collecting a long throw-in from Ramiro Corrales before dribbling into Vancouver's area and chipping a shot over the onrushing Whitecaps FC goalkeeper, Joe Cannon.
Four minutes later, substitute Alan Gordon fully extended his body for a mid-air diving header that glanced into the net for the game-winner. Wondolowski tacked on an insurance goal in the 78th minute, volleying home a well-placed free kick from Tressor Moreno for the Colombian's first career MLS assist.
Wondolowski's brace ties him with New York's Kenny Cooper for No. 2 in the Budweiser Golden Boot standings with six goals. Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry tops the list with seven.
The Earthquakes return to action on Saturday, April 14, against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena. Kickoff is 4 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet Plus, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
