Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Winnipeg, MB. -- The Western Hockey League and the Brandon Wheat Kings have announced plans to honour the Provincial Bantam Champions before Thursday's playoff game at MTS Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wheat Kings, who currently hold a 3-1 lead in their best of seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against the visiting Calgary Hitmen, will recognize members of the Pembina Valley Hawks before the opening face-off of game five.
The Hawks recently captured the provincial bantam title with a 2-0 series win over the Winnipeg Warriors in the best of three league final.
The Hawks, coached by Mike Bellisle, Ryan Friesen, Ryan Kehler and Gord Keith, will now represent Manitoba at the Western Canadian Bantam Championships, to be held in Spruce Grove, Alberta in early April.
Members of the Hawks include goalkeepers Travis Klassen and Cole Kehler, defencemen Derek Wood, Scott Owen, Lawson McDonald, Mitchell Dyck, Dane Halstead, Liam Macleod and Brad McLeod as well as forwards Michael Wirth, Colt Conrad, Griffen McLean, Mark Klassen, Ben Dalke, Cameron Wiens, Tyler Jeanson, Nolan McGuire, Wade Allison and James Vandevelde.
The team is managed by Paul McDonald and Dale Klassen.
Thursday's game will be the third of three to be played in Winnipeg this week as the Wheat Kings have been forced to play at MTS Centre, due to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
With Winnipeg Jets' Andrew Ladd and Eric Fehr performing the ceremonial opening face-off on Sunday night, the Wheat Kings skated to a 4-1 victory and after recognizing the Provincial Midget Champion Winnipeg Wild on Tuesday night, Brandon jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead en route to a 3-1 decision.
Should the series be extended, games six and seven of the opening round playoff series will be played at Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday and Tuesday, April 1st and 3rd.
Tickets to Thursday's game are on sale now at all Ticketmaster locations, including the Keystone Centre box office, online at ticketmaster.ca or by calling 1-855-985-5000.
