Scherer Leads Stingrays Past Cyclones

North Charleston, SC - Forward Matt Scherer skated in his 300th professional game and scored the game-winning goal as the South Carolina Stingrays (34-24-4-2) defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones (29-23-2-7) 3-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum Sunday afternoon.

Former Cyclones forward Daniel Koger lit the lamp for the Stingrays at 17:57 of the first period slipping a shot past the right pad of Cyclones goaltender Brian Foster (L, 18 saves on 20 shots) from the top of the right-wing circle. Forward Joe Pereira and defenseman Zach Tarkir recorded assists.

The Cyclones tied the contest at 3:40 of the third period on the power play with a tally from defenseman David MacDonald beating Stingrays netminder Philipp Grubauer (W, 27 saves on 28 shots) over the glove. Defenseman Maury Edwards and forward Michael Pelech grabbed assists. Moments later, the Stingrays reclaimed the lead with Scherer's seventh goal of the season at 5:34 from forwards Tyler Shelast and Pierre-Luc O'Brien. Stingrays forward Billy Ryan sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 14 seconds left in the game from Tarkir. The Stingrays finished the afternoon 0-for-1 on the power play while the Cyclones went 1-for-4.

The Stingrays continue their six-game homestand on Friday, March 16 against the Greenville Road Warriors at 7:05 p.m. the North Charleston Coliseum.
