Toronto Marlies News Release

The Toronto Marlies Hockey Club and the TCDSB will host over 4,000 students from 50 TCDSB schools for the 2012 Health Action Team Day, in support of The Angel Foundation for Learning. WHEN: Wednesday March 7, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. WHAT/WHY (photo-op): Health Action Team Day is a way to celebrate the good work of teachers and students who have established "Health Action Teams" in their schools as part of the school board's goal of establishing safe, healthy and caring schools. It also fosters leadership skills, teamwork, and delivers positive messages about the importance of a healthy lifestyle in a fun environment.

To prepare for the game, students have been exhibiting leadership in their schools to obtain a number of incentives at the game. Students have created healthy snack programs, established high quality intramural programs, and initiated anti-bullying campaigns, all in effort to demonstrate the importance of healthy living. Rewards for such activities are being given at the game including: the "fan tunnel" experience whereby students cheer on the players and shake their hands as they hit the ice, students participating in the intermission games and in-game performances, and the "future stars" experience where students participate on the ice with the players.

Students were also invited to participate in a Creative Writing Contest entitled "Hockey - Making A Difference". The top three winners of the contest shadowed a player from the Toronto Marlies for an entire day on February 25.

"I am always preaching to my players the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Their food choices have a direct impact on their performance on the ice," said Marlies Head Coach Dallas Eakins. "It is great to see the Marlies bringing such a positive message to the children of Toronto Catholic School Board".

A portion of ticket sales from this Marlies game will be donated to the Angel Foundation for Learning, an official charity of choice of the TCDSB, providing financial assistance to vulnerable students in TCDSB schools via breakfast programs, emergency and poverty relief, as well as summer camp opportunities for underprivileged Toronto youth, to name a few. The Toronto Marlies Health Action Team Day has raised close to $20,000.00 to date in support of the foundation's funds and programs.

"We are so excited to have been able to work with the Toronto Marlies, along with the TCDSB's Phys. Ed. Department and Health Action teams in providing such a unique educational experience for TCDSB students," said Jessica Colucci, Fundraising and Volunteer Manager, The Angel Foundation for Learning. "Healthy and active living are essential for successful learning, evident in the positive impact that our nutrition programs have on building bright futures for our city's most vulnerable children."
