Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants snapped their 2 game losing skid, blanking the Victoria Royals 6-0 Sunday afternoon at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria. The Giants got goals from 6 different scorers and Adam Morrison made 18 saves for his 1st shutout of the season.
Playing their third game in two and a half days, the Giants came out flying, getting on the board just 15 seconds into the game. Riley Kieser banged home his 5th goal of the season to put the Giants in front 1-0. That is how things would stand after 20 minutes. Vancouver outshot Victoria 12-8 in the opening period.
In the second period the flood gates opened. The Giants got 4 goals from 4 different scorers. David Musil, Tyler Vanscourt, Matt Bellerive, and Jackson Houck scored for Vancouver to give the visitors a 5-0 lead through 40 minutes. The Giants outshot the Royals 19-4 in the frame. That would spell the end of the day for Royals netminder Jared Rathjen, who after beating the Giants the night before, gave up 5 goals on 31 shots. He was replaced by Keith Hamilton in the third period.
Cain Franson added his 26th goal of the season in the final period to round out the scoring. Adam Morrison wasn't busy on the afternoon, but did make some key saves to earn his 1st shutout of the season. He stopped all 18 shots he faced. 6-0 was the final. The Giants finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Royals went 0-for-4.
With the victory the Giants are now tied in points with the Spokane Chiefs with 78 points, but the Chiefs remain in 4th place in the Western Conference because they have a game in hand.
The Giants have just 6 games remaining in the regular season schedule, beginning with the Tri-City Americans on Wednesday March 7 at the Pacific Coliseum. It is a Giants Alumni Night honouring Evander Kane and presented by TELUS. 900 lucky fans will go home with a limited edition Evander Kane Bobblehead Doll and the Winnipeg Jets forward will be added to the Giants' 'Ring of Honour'. Puck drop is at 7:00 pm. The pregame show begins at 6:35 pm on AM 650.
