The Niagara IceDogs regained the lead in the Eastern Conference with a convincing 7-1 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in front of a sellout crowd at the Gatorade Garden City Complex Thursday night.

The first period saw the IceDogs get off to a great start as they would find the back of the net early and often, scoring four times in the period. Brett Ritchie would open the scoring less than a minute in and would be followed by goals from Dougie Hamilton, Carter Verhaeghe and Steven Shipley. Sault Ste. Marie would then find the score sheet before the end of the period on a 5 on 3 powerplay to make it 4-1 after 20 minutes. Shots in the period were 12-10 in favour of Niagara.

The second period would see the goalies settle in as Alex Friesen would score for the only goal of the frame. Sault Ste. Marie would outshoot the IceDogs in the period 12-11, but Visentin would hold strong making it 5-1 after two.

The IceDogs would finish off the victory in the third by picking up a pair of goals to make it a 7-1 final. Freddie Hamilton would strike on the powerplay with his 100th career OHL goal to make it 6-1 before Jamie Oleksiak rounded out the scoring with his third goal as an IceDog.

The victory saw the IceDogs continue their strong play with a total team victory. Visentin was once again solid in goal and with seven different goal scorers, the IceDogs demonstrated their balance offensively.

The IceDogs will now head to Mississauga tomorrow night to visit the Majors before returning to St. Catharines Sunday afternoon to host Kingston at 2pm.
