Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG - Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that the baseball club has signed infielder and catcher Louis Ott.
Ott, 26, was acquired by the Goldeyes from the Gary SouthShore RailCats early last season and had a stellar campaign in Winnipeg. He hit .325, which is a career-high for him, in 94 games and added five home runs and 38 RBI. He also tallied a career-high 12 stolen bases and .447 on-base percentage.
"We are thrilled to have Lou Ott back this year," Forney said. "He's a very versatile player. Last year we got him at a desperate time of need when Amos Ramon went down with a torn ACL and Lou came in a did a great job for us a third base. This year the plan is going to be for him to fill a super utility role. He'll play a little third base and a second base and he'll get to catch a few times a week."
Aside from his abilities in the infield, Ott has experience behind the plate. He saw action in 15 games as catcher for the Goldeyes last season and caught 20 games for Gary back in 2010.
Prior to playing independent baseball, Ott spent four seasons in the Detroit Tigers system and one season in the Florida Marlins organization.
The Goldeyes now have eight players signed for the 2012 season, including two pitchers and six position players.
In an unrelated move, the Goldeyes have released pitcher Jamie Vermilyea, who has retired from professional baseball to become the manager of the Maui Strong Warriors in the North American League.
Fans looking to purchase season tickets and nine-game mini packs for the 2012 season can call the Goldeyes office at 982-BASE (2273) or visit the Shaw Park box office.
