Penguins Open Weekend with Win Over Senators
February 17, 2012 - American Hockey League (AHL) Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Alex Grant and Matt Rust each scored a pair of goals to lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 6-1 win over the Binghamton Senators on Friday at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The Penguins were looking to put a string of bad starts behind them and were able to do so beginning with their first power play of the game. Grant notched his first of the night 7:28 into the first, faking a shot from the point before pumping a slapper past a screened Robin Lehner.
Ben Street then made the score 2-0 for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton when he buried a goal mouth feed from Bryan Lerg at 14:32.
Forty-three seconds later, Nick Petersen was dragged down during an odd-man rush for a delayed call on the Senators. With the Penguins' net empty for the extra attacker, Ryan Craig was able to work the puck along to Rust, who fired home his third of the year.
During a two-man advantage, Binghamton got on the board with 1:45 left before the first intermission as Stephane Da Costa hit Corey Locke for the one-time shot past goalie Scott Munroe.
Grant helped the Penguins retake their three-goal lead at 12:56 of the second with another power play tally, rattling a point shot of the back post of the Senators' net. Both Joey Mormina and Eric Tangradi registered their second assist of the game on Grant's sixth goal of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went up by a score of 5-1 at 8:04 of the third as Rust also recorded his second of the contest, tipping a bid from Alexandre Picard past Lehner.
Petersen completed the scoring with 49 seconds remaining in regulation, potting his seventh this year.
Munroe made 24 saves on 25 shots to raise his record to 10-3-3 on the season. The Penguins went 2-for-3 on power play and the penalty kill.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins continue their road trip with a match against the Albany Devils on Saturday, February 18 at 7:00PM. For more information, call (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
